"I spoke to Luis Diaz on the phone, we were quite far down the line to sign him from Porto," Moyes said. "My understanding was that Liverpool planned to come in in the summer, so we thought we'd try and get him in January. I don't know if that affected Liverpool's decision, but he's a really good player and we didn't get him.

Guess that helped sealed the deal for us. Can imagine the conversation.

LD: hello, who's this?

DM: Son, this is David Moyes, coach of West Ham.

LD: who?

DM: ex-manager of Man UTD

LD: Sorry, Man UTd have had too many managers recently, don't recollect your name.

DM: am Ex-everton manager who proved that you don't have to win anything for 14 years to be a winner...

LD hangs up the phone....

DM: hello... Hello son?

Such a lucky escape for Diaz, his career would have been ruined.

That flick was reminiscent of that brilliant Edmundo goal against the Mancs in the World Club Cup final.

Imagine how good Diaz is going to be once he’s settled and had his quota of man hugs from Kloppo. You feel like once he hits his stride he’s just going to go from strength to strength.
