Ferguson could have said that Moyes now needed to overhaul the team, but instead said “I’ve left you a title winning team” and dropped him right in it. 

I agree it was a little like our 1990 team. But then our failure that followed wasn't Kenny's fault, it was what souness did. 

 

The chances of Moyes being able to continue to drain the tank with some of those players ended when he decided to blow away Ferguson's back room team to bring in his own boys - listening to their players from back then he'd blown it by their preseason tour to Australia. Souness made a similar mistake (albeit bringing in boersma) but he got rid of those senior players too soon who could have helped him through the transition instead of just coming in and blowing it all up. 

 

In both cases, I can see the teams needed a refresh, but they both failed because of what came after for me.
