Someone's having a laugh - they Rang Nick and got Ralf

It's one thing to rebuild (or build) a small club with complete backing from all involved, from ushers to owners. It's another to try to reshape something like United, with all it's hangers-on, and it's concern with commerce over on-pitch success.

I don't wish him ill...well, maybe I do wish him ill--as long as he comes out of it minted I won't feel too bad if he fails miserably and drops them in the shit even deeper than they are now.

He's obviously going to be ace but it would be absolutely hilarious if we got some magical moyes moments out of him, he fails hard and they despair as it all goes down the old toilet.

Ragnick says himself if you want to press, you have to be all in. Obviously that won't be possible with Ronaldo. So it'll be interesting to see what happens and how he deals with that whole situation.

One nice scenario that could potentially happen is that if Ralf is successful as a coach for them in the initial 6 month period, then there may be calls for him to stay on as coach which could add a lot of pressure to the new guy if he doesn't start getting results asap. Conversely if stolenrangerover is shite, then it will go tits up fast and add a shit load of pressure to the new guy if he doesn't start getting results fast in the hopes of turning it around.

Having said that he'll probably be great for them, which is unfortunate but here's hoping the curse continues.

Seems a poor cultural fit. An actual authentic gentleman, not an obnoxious preening pretender as they typically specialise in over there. He and Ronaldo will be at loggerheads.

As much as I would love them to continue to fuck up if they give him the right backing then this should be a good appointment.

I just find it weird that they have only given him a “consultancy” title after the initial 6 months and not a DOF or Technical Director. Seems like they don’t know what they want and are winging it. well hopefully anyway.

They want to know if a new manager wants to keep him and in if so in what role. Nothing weird about it

Then why offer the 2 year consultancy? It’s just another need to pay him off if the new guy comes in and doesn’t want him. Granted he may not have taken it in that case.

The speculation seems to be is that he’s there to manage short term but with a longer term view to reshape their set up and find a manager that will work in that set up.

It just seems that they haven’t really decided what they want and if that’s true then as a Liverpool fan that’s excellent news. hopefully they spend a load then do a 180 and try another direction.

He obviously demanded a min 2 years . If the new guy doesn't want him then he gets a pay off . Having decided they wanted a temp then its the price they had to pay . If it enables them to get Poch in the summer then I guess they will consider it money well spent.

I seem to remember our 70/80s teams pressing.

I remember pressing when playing at school. We called it "closing down" and I did it like a headless chicken.

I think they mean pressing in an organised way and I'm sure he'll improve that for them (from a low level) but the idea that he invented it seems a bit far fetched.

I reckon he'll have them playing well towards the end of the season and they'll keep him on as manager.

Was about to write that they won't get anywhere near fourth, but looking at how diabolically bad just about every other side beyond the top three is, it's probably still all to play for under a competent manager.

If they'd sacked Ole after we tanked them, I think they'd already be in 4th.

Arsenal have remembered in the last few games that they're Arsenal, Spurs are still Spurs despite having Conte and Leicester have completely imploded. Would be funny if Moyes got West Ham fourth.

Yeah ‘ closing down’ most were too lazy. It’s a bit like Neuer inventing the sweeper keeper haha!

The big difference between now and then for pressing, is today's pressing is a direct consequence of the backpass laws. The only reason we have this idea of how drilled the players need to be and this effort to find a victim, is they can't just pass it back to the keeper any more and he picks it up. It's a natural evolution of what was done by lots of teams once that law changed.

How laws changed the game is an interesting topic. The rule you described definitely improved the game for the better.
