Steven Gerrard - Aston Villa Manager

Rangers and Villa are non entity's outside the UK. Within the UK Rangers are a far bigger club than Villa, they have 2 Cities where half the population live for the club, they have hundreds of thousands of football supporters who would rank them as their 2nd/Scottish club. Villa haven't been able to regularly fill their ground for 17 or 18 of the last 20 years.

Villa are former European Champions and English League Champions. Both those things are far more prestigious than anything Rangers have ever won.

How can the English title be more prestigious to a Scottish club than the Scottish title?

Fucking hell.

It's not. It is just more prestigious to everyone else in the world not in Scotland.

Villa are a far better option for any owner, executive, manager, player or tea lady right now. That is without question.

Well, apparently there are a fair few who disagree historically.

They definitely are today.

How do you define bigger, given Villa's English titles and European Cup? It seems you are going on supporters over prestigious trophies.

Oh it's 'prestigious' trophies now. I'm pretty sure to a supporter of a Scottish side, the titles and cups up there are as prestigious down here.

Rangers have been around for 149 years and have won 119 trophies if that helps put that into perspective.

They've won one that you would actually swap for a bag of wotsits.

Well you cant count Scottish titles and cups as prestigious as they are simply not comparable. The one major trophy Rangers have won is the Cup Winners Cup but Villa's European Cup trumps that.

Mate, I don't know if you are aware but Scottish teams can't win the english league so their title is as prestigious to them as the english league is to an english side.

SP Tre Penne are rightly proud of their four San Marino league titles but frankly no-one has heard of the cunts.

If you're measuring the size of a club, at this level, then their trophies need to be prestigious to people outside that country.

Fuck knows if Aston Villa are a bigger club than Rangers though.

You'd be tempted to say seven league titles, seven FA Cups, five league cups, and a European cup, would make them bigger, but to be fair they've won one of those league titles and one of those FA Cups in the last 100 years.

They were almost certainly the biggest club in the country in the late 1800s. But bar one very good side in the mid 70s to early 80s, and other reasonable one in the mid 90s, they've largely been a bit shite since then.

I also can't help but feel that photo of those four absolute fucking helmets in a caravan having an anti-Gerrard party or whatever the fuck they were doing disqualifies them from being a big club.

Celtic and Rangers are kind of irrelevant in modern football. Villa are as well but because they play in the Premier League, they have a potential springboard to relevancy.

For the purposes of the debate about Gerrard, does it matter if Villa are historically bigger than rangers or vice versa? They're both big clubs. They've both won things. On a global scale they're both pretty irrelevant now and highly unlikely to change that no matter who is managing them.

'To them' is the key phrase. Its irrelevant to most of the wider world of football though.

Feyenoord have one European Cup and two UEFA Cups which is more than Rangers and Celtic combined. They are a massive club. In Rotterdam.
