I am still a Leonard Cohen, Tindersticks and Smiths Fan so not against depressing music per se just it needs to bit of humour or self deprecation thrown in. Take this as an example from Leonard Cohen's Chelsea Hotel

 

"you told again, you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception"

 

She's clearly told poor Leonard several times that he's ugly and she's out of his league but he's still trying. I think that's quite a witty line about the desperate lengths men will go to just to get laid. You don't get that self deprecation with joy Division although you do get Martin Hannet's production.

I’ve never understood why some people are sniffy about “middle of the road” music. A good song is a good song.

They were post punk and very dark.
