Just watched the episode about Juventus and calciopoli. Very interesting , their director of sport Moggi was a right slimey get caught bang to rights and received a 5 year sentence but never spent a day in prison.

Corrupt as fuck that league.

The book Calcio by John Foot is a great insight into the history of Italian football, including how the deck has always been stacked in Juventus’s favour. It’s about 15 years old now so could do with an update.

Just looked this up. It says on the cover it’s an updated version but not sure if a further update is now needed.

It’s also free on Kindle Unlimited so I’ll definitely be reading.

The history of Argentinian football; ‘Angels With Dirty Faces’ by Jonathan Wilson also looks interesting.

Cheers for the recommendation.

Calciopoli was the tip of the iceberg wth him. Not just bribing refs, but also running a PED lab from the club's training ground. Lippi's Juventus in particular were physically stronger than their counterparts, and it's telling that the back-to-back CL finals they lost in the 1990s were against opponents deliberately set up to be more physical. It was more obvious against Dortmund, but Heynckes' Real Madrid opted for physicality in their final too, picking the likes of Karembeu and Morientes instead of Savio and Suker for example.
