I’d expect a Top Red such as yourself to be a dedicated student of the clubs history. Not difficult to find plenty of evidence to show that Souness was a better, certainly more complete, midfield player than Alonso or Mascherano.

Yes, “top reds” such as myself are fully aware of what a great player Souness was for us.

Still, in 2021, you can make YouTube videos of Leroy Fer look like peak Souness.

If I was going off video’s and reputation, I’d have gone for Gerrard, McDermott and Souness. I’ve chose to go off my own (many!) match going experiences.

And thereby narrowing the sources of information from which your opinion has been formed. That’s before we get into the filters that often provide us with a belief that isn’t aligned with reality.

Taking a moment to challenge what formed your belief that Mascherano was better than Souness might lead you to a different answer.

Having said that. It’s your opinion, you’re entitled to it. Even when it’s wrong.

My opinion is to base it off my match going experiences, nothing else!

If I was bringing in other factors, I’d pick another 3.

If this debate is causing conflict, just wait until we get to the forwards.

I full expect anarchy when I don’t pick Dalglish and Rush for the same reasons!

FYI, it’ll be Salah, Suarez and either Barnes or Mane.

I'll try to help - Mane is great, but Barnes shits on other left wingers from a great height (though my dad would have probably disagreed, and said Peter Thompson was the best)! Anyway, come on Belarus!

Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano.

Part of the best midfield in the world, don’tcha know.

As a 39 year old, I still think they were the best 3 I’ve seen for us. As great as the last few seasons players have been as a unit, I like these 3 players more individually.

Do you not think that Mascherano was a limited footballer? He was very good at defending, but he on the ball he was poor IMO. I think Fabinho is a much more complete defensive midfielder compared till the Argentinian.

Well, we did sell him to the a side genuinely regarded of the greatest passers of the ball in history!

I get what you mean though. I loved Mascherano. Reminded me of my playing style, especially chipping at referee’s.

One underrated part of Fabinho's game is the occasional little chip into the space behind the back four for Mo or Sadio to run on to. It gladdens the heart and it's another reason I prefer him to Mascherano.

And if we are speaking about solely midfield, then Souness was better than Gerrard also in my opinion.  Gerrard the better attacking midfielder, and the better all round player.  But as a midfielder, there was no one better than Souness to ever play in England.

I agree. Gerrard was the better all round player, one of the very greatest England have ever produced, but Souness was the greater pure central midfielder. In my opinion, not by much, but he was superior.
