I might as well jib it off - that’s what it’s going to be isn’t it? I’ve embarked on a pointless exercise

Nah, you’ve started, so you might as well finish. Robertson isn’t a shoo-in by any means, in my opinion. Salah won’t get in everyone’s team, some will pick Suarez, others might include Keegan.

Yeah, fair enough. What formation shall I do? 4-4-2 or 4-3-3? I haven’t thought it through

I’d probably go 4-4-2, as it’s the formation that I probably most associate with Liverpool. Either, though.

It the positional stuff that causes the issue actually. If we do 4-4-2, where does Mo and Mane compete for a place for example - wing or one of the front 2? I might Just do 4-3-3 and have midfielders and attackers to make it easy. It’ll speed it up a bit too. Will have the results by the weekend then too

When comparing footy players from different eras, you have to use a footballing equivalent of the boxing pound-for-pound system, to allow for differing levels of fitness, etc. Ultimately, it’s just a bit of fun and is entirely subjective.

With today's training and analysis, just imagine how even greater Clemence would have been.

3-5-2! A trio from VVD, Hansen, Lawrenson, Hyypia, Hughes would be formidable. And I'm not talking Northampton Town formidable, either.

How many of today's team would get into a Liverpool team if they were transported back forty years in time? Not many - and if they did only Virgil and Robbo would last till Christmas. Like matching greyhounds in a scrap against bulldogs.

Everyone in todays squad would get into the teams from back then.

Todays players are simply much more fit and better technically, they run faster, they run longer, they are stronger, they have better technique and better stamina.

Thats why its not comparable.

Not at all. If you write off Clemence because you never saw him play then you are imagining him being an inferior player to Alison. I was saying I've seen both and Clem was better. No slight on Alison.

I have seen him play plenty of times.

In your other post you said,  With today's training and analysis, just imagine how even greater Clemence would have been.

My point is that we cant imagine these things, we have to look at how the players performed without having to imagine how they could perform if they played and grew up 40 years later.

Football has developed, players are fitter than ever before, they train better than ever before, they have more information than ever before etc, etc.

Its basically pointless.

Its a bit like saying a Commodore 64 is the best computer ever.
