Pele never tested himself in Europe.

That doesn’t make him the lesser player. People use a similar argument to try and tell you why the other Ronaldo is better than Messi, they say their man tested himself in more leagues than Lionel.

You can certainly praise them for that, recognise that it will have added something to their game, but it doesn’t necessarily make them a better player. The other way of looking at it is that Pele managed to be the player he was without the advantages of playing in Europe.

Imagine they happen to be on the sidelines in a park, you’re captain of one team and you’re taking it in turns to pick players. First pick, all you care about is who is the best footballer.

If Messi and other Ronaldo are there. It’s Messi.

If Pele and Ronaldo are there. It’s Pele.

Tostao, Rivelino, Garrincha, Carlos Alberto never "tested themselves" In Europe. It wasn't really a thing.

Stanley Mathews didn't test himself in Europe, nor did Bobby Charlton. And they didn't test themselves in South America either.

There's a strong case to be made that Santos were the best club team in the world in the 60s.

They were mate for sure if you don't count Real Madrid, Benfica or Celtic

Well they beat Benfica comfortably in the intercontinental cup, with Pele scoring 5 goals.

I'm sure Santos with 5 or 6 Brazilian internationals would have been trembling at the thought of Celtic.

I wanted Pele in the team. This is your fault, @lifetime fan, you turncoat. If you had voted for Van Basten, we would have had a shootout. I hope you stub your toe getting out of the shower, or your dog, if you have one, farts in your face.

Hahahaha

I actually went with Ronaldo instead of van Basten to make it a tie (11 vs 11) between him and Pele.

Brazilian teams also regularly toured Europe during Pele’s era. Whilst it can’t be argued that these were ‘official’ games, they weren’t friendlies either.

Santos played all the big teams, in front of massive crowds. Pele scored a career total of 448 goals in these matches, none of which counted in his ‘official’ total. Yes, some were against the footballing equivalent of cannon fodder but many were against the best teams in the world with both sides desperate to win. The footballing landscape has changed since, but these tournaments were a big deal back then.

There’s an interesting article about such games here:

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.espn.co.uk/football/brazil-bra/story/4290552/peles-1,000%2b-goals-why-santos-claims-about-the-goat-should-be-taken-seriously%3fplatform=amp

It shouldn’t be forgotten that Pele also came to Europe as a seventeen year old and became the key player in Brazil’s first World Cup victory.

Anyway, democracy is democracy. At least it’s the proper Ronaldo that beat him.
