Ferdinand: I would take Mo Salah over Luis Suarez

Clearly Suarez was phenomenal, but he was poor by his standards at the end of that 2013/14 season when we most needed him not to be. It’s also sometimes conveniently forgotten that we did pretty well without him during his long suspension at the start of that season. I also find the whole ‘one man team’ narrative of that season disrespectful to Gerrard, among a few others, including Sturridge, who had the season of his life.

All fair points.

Take Suarez out though, and barring an unlikely replacement of the same quality, we're struggling to finish in the top 4

This is another "at his peak" vs "overall" question, really.

I mean, Salah has been brilliant for us but no one is ever touching Suarez in the fall of 2013. Genuinely competing with Messi for about 3-4 months to be the best player in the world.

But if it's overall impact for Liverpool, then it's Salah, and while it's sort of close right now, if Salah stays and wins a few more trophies, it won't be close by the end of his career.

It's the same as the Original Ronaldo vs. Rapist Ronaldo debate. One was better at his peak, but the other has had a better career and you'd have to say will go down as the overall greater footballer. Not that either of them can tie Messi's or even Maradona's boots.

Sterling was our best player in the final third of that season.

I love Mo but i’ve still never seen a better player for us, than Suarez. Even my old man who has seen all of the greats, says he’s the best he’s ever seen.

I mean my dad’s a prick but for once I agree with him.

Having said all of that, I doubt anyone was giving Suarez any more stick in the Barca game at Anfield, than me. In a discussion about ability I can be magnanimous but as thing stand right now he can fuck right off and I hope we destroy Atletico in the coming games.

Suarez was out of this world in that season we nearly won the league. The quality of those goals every week was on another level that won't be seen again, ever.

But we still only won one League cup with him. Salah's goals and consistency has taken us to 2 European cup finals, won us the league, super cup, world club cup and nearly won us another league. He's still finding another level each year too. This season he's been incredible so far, improved passing, harder work rate, better awareness, better control.

Salah for me all day long, he just keeps getting better.

The only argument against this is the quality of teammate Salah has compared to what Suarez had,and manager too.

But Suarez was pure Suarez 20 times a season. Suarez does that and it’s “business as usual”. Mo is great; Louis was greatest-in-PL-history great.

Absolutely, but that just reminded me so much of him

He was... and this guy Salah's record suggests similar... with his best-ever season perhaps unfolding before our eyes now.

Couldn't agree more.

Never left a ground home or away without a smile on my face when he played.

Remember when we signed him, I thought ah he might be good north of the border but this is the 1st division. First game I watched him was against Chelsea he sent Micky Droy for the echo and chipped the keeper. Not only a great player but an absolute gent. I walked the course with him when he played the Nelson Mandela invitational so down to earth, he chatted away for the whole round.

Great story mate.

I had a signed painting of the iconic running away after the Chelsea title winning goal behind the bar when we ran a pub, winded the shite up so much!

Love it, can just imagine the bitters. I had a signed pic of him hurdling the ad boards after scoring the winner agains Bruges at Wembley. Gutted when it was "lost" during one of our many moves.

Another iconic moment amongst the many. Even seeing him on the TV before the game made me smile amongst the sadness of the Sir Roger tribute.

Fuck Suarez. Can't stand the fucker, but Ferdinand isn't a racist who constantly dragged his or our club's name through the mud for a good couple of years is he?

No, just a drug cheat and adulterer. Great lad is Rio.
