Hovland played reasonable well, he missed a few putters I would have hoped he could bury, but overall he was one of the better competitors for Europe.

I'm just winding you up. He played pretty well, is obviously one of Europe's best prospects, and seems like a more pleasant character than most on the PGA tour.

So, I'm wrong? If so, kindly teach me the error of my ways.

Well the first thing to say is that I tripped over my words initially (I blame the alcohol). What I was trying to say was that it’s great seeing how human he is. I’m in no position to say he’s “great”, but petty word picking aside, I reckon he’s likely to be a really good lad (we can never know for sure, can we?)

Yes he played golf with Trump. I wouldn’t say that he buddied up with him. High profile person plays golf with high profile person shocker. I doubt it was a case of him texting his buddy Donald for a knock.

I bet these pro’s sometimes turn up for a round and have no idea who will be there. Like Tommy last week. If he’d known he would be infected by the putting yips, he wouldn’t have gone within 100 miles of Dave.

If you google McIlroy and Trump then you’ll see what Rory thinks of the donald.

Rory is a good lad, and unlike so many top sportsman he speaks up on a lot of issues and lends his support to some really good causes. He’s also one of the most honest sports people i’ve ever come across, which is refreshing in a world full of boring sports people.

It was so TLW because we have a habit of projecting shit on the back of isolated incidents without context. We’re fucking experts at that, me included.

Well, if you hadn't said he was a great human being, I wouldn't have responded in the first place!

I don't think there's any excuse for playing with Trump, personally. McIlroy isn't stupid. I assume he's advised by people who aren't stupid.

Anyway...

You're a bad person for being in a photo with a bad person now, apparently. Can't be many good people out there if we do that.

Just a photo, was it?

Of course, if some hypothetical '80s golfer had played a round of golf with Thatcher, we'd brush that right off.

There are other reasons to dislike McIlroy, but I'm not going there right now...

Please go there, I'm intrigued.

If I'm honest, a lot of it has to do with the Irish media's obsession with "Rory". Golf is covered excessively in general in Ireland, but you'd swear McIlroy had won 10+ majors based on his coverage. He's won one more major than Harrington. But every time he farts, it's a news story.

You can say that's not his fault, and largely it's not, but he's part of that insufferable Nike culture (which ultimately seems to have damaged his game, so far as I can tell).

Then there's the whole drama around the last two Olympics, who he wanted to play for, the Zika virus, how it didn't matter anyway, but how it now does. All of that has been tedious beyond belief. Play for whoever you want or don't. But spare us the personal, ongoing psychodrama around it. And every other aspect of your game and career.

Granted, however, I suspect most golfers are gobshites and he's by no means the worst. I like golf as a sport, but the culture of the game is pretty repulsive to me. And has been since my less-than-brilliant teenage career as a ball spotter and caddy at Woodbrook.

Plus he's a Man United fan who dumped a hot Liverpool fan!
