Got done for doing 35 in a 30 zone about 18 months ago. That doesn't quite fit in with the 10% plus two. Probably just depends on whatever priorities they have on a particular week or month.

Was that the speed they recorded or the speed on your display?

It’s 10% plus 1mph

In an industry publication, the Chief Of Hihways Police was asked the policy on speeding and he was quoted as saying it's 10% plus 2mph is 'tolerated'. The speed display on a car and the actual speed are different, as evidenced by GPS positioning that regularly places speed as around 3mph different. This is why there is a certain amount of leeway as if your display says 34mph, you may be at 30mph or 31mph. But if your speed display says 37mph, you're most likely at least driving at 33/34mph so there is very llittle room for error. If a ticket says 35mph as in @VladimirIlyich's case, most likely his speed display would have said 38mph.

The policy on speed tolerance could have changed since that publication. I have asked for clarification from someone high up in the industry.

The new speed cameras on the A14 outside Cambridge are incredible. As you drive along you can see the cameras on the opposite carriageway flashing almost constantly catching people unawares. They must be making a fortune.

They’ve got tiny cameras attached to the overhead gantries all the way along, instead of the big yellow boxes that used to be there.
