Matthaus should have been the central midfielder, Rijkaard should have been the defensive midfielder, in my opinion.

Anyway, I voted for Zidane and Zico, even though the latter was primarily an attacking midfielder.

Iniesta and Xavi were great players, but I couldn’t be arsed with Barcelona or Spain, when they were playing.

I hope Pele is the Striker/Centre Forward. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we’re in danger of ending up with a team that is mostly the best of the 90s/00s, as opposed to the greatest team of all time.

Ronaldo for me (Brazilian)

Nah, it has to be Pele. Pele wouldn’t be my choice if I was picking my favourite all-time XI, but he is widely regarded to be the best centre-forward of all time.

If you don't count Stringvest, the average age of the forum is probably about 42. I can see why some more recent players are being picked.

It’s a bit like the music one for me. I’m obviously familiar with many of the nominations but, where I’m less so, I’ve been encouraged to educate myself (listen to the playlist anyway).

I appreciate it takes a bit more time with the footballers, but it’s a very pleasurable way to spend a few minutes here and there. It is for me anyway.

Some of the greats of the game have missed out entirely, or gone out early. Understandable, given the average age of those voting, but a little disappointing.

Oh and the answer is Pele.

Unlike Maradona for example, Pele never tested himself in Europe, the World Cup though huge only takes 8 games or so to win. Ronaldo at his best was absolutely sensational and was by some distance the best player in the world. He won everything Pele did and then some. Pele could be the better player, but I wouldn’t think it’d be clear cut.

I used to think Pele but the amount of goals in Brazil against teams made almost entirely of Amazon tribesmen has made me cynical about him in my later years. I think Maradona was at least just as good,if not better.
