PODCAST: Leeds 0 Liverpool 3 - Match Reaction

TLW Editor Dave Usher is joined by Ian Brown and Stu Montagu to reflect on a bittersweet win at Elland Road.

A good three points and a convincing performance but the shine was definitely taken off it by that dreadful injury to young Harvey Elliott.

Was the red card justified? How good was Thiago? How is Fabinho not the first name on Brazil's teamsheet? Was it disappointing that we only scored three? And what was going on with Sadio's performance in front of goal?

All this and more is covered in a lively discussion recorded on the full time whistle.

The Mané tackle is different to the Elliot tackle. Strujik leapt into the air and was out of control and his hind leg with the full force of a projected 13 stone Plus, landed on Harvey's foot. The Scottish centre back didn't go through Mané.

The red card is not for idea or theory of the tackle, it's that his hind leg went through Elliot when he had thrown himself through the air and bust the kids leg.

The argument about the tackle boils down to a very simple point...

It's a foul and it is one where a player lunges at an opponent when challenging for the ball from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or that endangers the safety of an opponent.

The standard punishment for such a foul is a red card.

That isn't my opinion or a quoted opinion from anyone else - that is from the laws of the game.

And that is that.

Makes a mockery of most pundit's "analysis".

Absolutely ... i find it staggering there is even a debate about it. But then i think about how bad punditry is - and i am not surprised at all.

Yup listened to some BBC bams (fuck knows why) and they were all on the "it's an unfortunate accident" train, and then moved on to Klopps interview paraphrasing them- 'that he did well making the red card a non-issue because he got a lot of negative reaction after the Burnley game'... not much introspection going on, unsurprising given how thick most of them are and how group think works alongside independent thought being squashed.

It feels to me the media are just waiting to have a real go for Jurgen, but are having to hold off while we are doing well on the results front, though that could be some typical fan bias from myself. Not sure if others are detecting that as well? Or maybe it's there for all successful teams.

Another great podcast. Sorry Brownie, cant agree with you mate. No player should be 'jumping' into tackles, ever. The player isnt in control when you jump, you're flying through the air until you make contact with the ground or a body part.

There seems to be an agenda in the media to write us off. What was it, none of the BBC's 20 pundits had us as title winners, 1 even said we'd finish outside the top 4?!

If them and the rest want to write us off, that's up to them. As Dave says, they've concentrated on transfers and Ronaldo, the amount of coverage devoted to him incidentally, a complete joke.

What can you say about Sadio? Yeah, not a good performance but the boy never gave up.

That’s fine mate, would be boring if we all agreed on everything wouldn’t it!? And wouldn’t make for a great pod either.

You need to plug it at the end of each episode too.

But I'll stop reminding you

I know, I know! This was a complete rush job though, I was in a hotel room down south, recording and editing it on the laptop and I needed to get it out there as quickly as possible as I had an early tee time on Monday so needed to go to bed!

I will get onto it eventually though. Chris has been on at me too, so between us we'll get something sorted.

He’s not bothered is he? I think he knows it was just unfortunate the way it happened. You’ll see tackles like that hundreds of times this season and nothing will happen (the ref wasn’t even giving a foul for this I don’t think?)

As I said yesterday, people can have different opinions on it, that’s fine but for me it’s quite telling that the vast majority of players (current and ex, including Harvey) have said it was wrong for him to get a red card.

Players are notoriously shit for actually knowing the laws of the game.

It wasn’t a nasty, malicious tackle I agree.
It was 100% a red card.
