PODCAST: Transfer Window Recap, FSG under the microscope and Michael Edwards off?

The transfer window came and went and the Reds did very little. Understandably, many of the natives are restless and FSG are coming under increasing scrutiny, not least with the news that Michael Edwards is reportedly off at the end of the season.

 

Chris Smith is joined by TLW Editor Dave Usher and long time TLW contributors Paul Natton and Dan Thomas in a bumper length episode of the podcast.

 

Why no new forward? Should the entire budget have been spent on Konate? Do we need new owners? Is there even a realistic and palatable alternative to FSG? All of this is covered as well as some broader points about the damage the oil clubs have done to the transfer market and why transfer windows in general are a miserable and frustrating time.

 

The lads also discuss some of the best and worst transfer windows of recent times, with Gerard Houllier's summer of 1999 in particular bringing back a lot of happy memories.

One thing that nobody has brought up yet is how we were never in the conversation with Jadon Sancho. Heavily linked with him last summer but obviously didn’t have the money to compete with Utd.

A lot of it echoes my thoughts on what Man City, PSG, Man U and Chelsea have done to the current game with massive wages. Where will it all end? I don't care about the game as much as I used to, and with these lot breaking the rules what's the point.

The sad thing is, we would have been as far down that road as them if the club had been braver in the 80s. We were the first English club to wear sponsored shirts and refused to wear a non sponsored one when BBC or ITV wanted to show highlights. The reason being we got more money from the sponsors, Hitachi, than from BBC \ ITV.

 

But then we kept sponsorship and merchandising at arms length until we were so far behind, united and a few others had disappeared over the curve.

We never properly dealt with the stadium issue either. We should have had full, frank dialogue with residents on terms favourable to them and had a stadium comparable in size to OT.

They aren't cheats except for the badgering of refs and getting them banned from Old Trafford for giving unfavourable decisions against the home team.

Remember when they just didn't send the papers for the de Gea to Real Madrid transfer and blamed a fax machine? In 2015!

And then had to give De Gea 350k a week or something, which when he signed it saw his form completely fall off a cliff.
