I thought his father was the dominant brother in the series, and Junior just drove the car.

But in the movie his father looked like a bit of a chump. Or was that just at home, where Livia was wearing the pants in the family?

It wasn't really focused on him though.  I think a series would be good . The film wasn't great but I think a series would be better. If its shit so be it

I think David Chase finally jumped the shark with this. Good fun for Soprano's fans spotting the in jokes and references but otherwise aimless and no real plot. The black riot's sub plot seemed very shoe horned in and the story about the rival numbers gang just fizzled out unresolved. If you watched this having no knowledge of the Soprano's you'd say it was utter shit. Please no more.

I’ve been watching some of the classic clips of the TV series on YouTube and it brought home to me just how poor this is. I was probably a bit generous with my score on the film thread.

Yeah it's absolutely shite if you compare them.

A nothing film. Completely pointless.

Undeserving of it's own thread.

It's so shit it's hard to comprehend that it's created by the same person as The Sopranos.

I'll never complain about the Kevin Finnerty episode ever again.

Watched this last night.

I thought it was alright. But, nothing better than that.

I agree on some of the character criticisms. Uncle Junior was poorly portrayed. Livia seemed one of the better portrayals and was maybe underused. As was Johnny Boy. And the Silvio Dante portrayal was laughably shite.

I don't think that the story was too bad. Hardly captivating but was of it's time and portrayed what kind of grifts they'd likely have been up to at that time in history.

It was hard to become attached to the characters though. With it being a prequel, you already knew the fate of most of the characters like Paulie, Silvio, Tony and his parents etc. And, with it being a short film rather than a series, there wasn't really sufficient time to look beyond the fact that the other main characters are Mafioso - who are generally horrible people - or to get to know them as people and maybe warm to them as an anti-hero figure, which was a luxury that the longer Sopranos series format allowed for. When watching the Sopranos TV series, I didn't want the likes of Tony, Silvio, Uncle Junior and Paulie to come to harm. But, in this film, I didn't really give a shit what happened to the main characters whose fate you didn't know/couldn't remember.

It's weird as it's probably a film that is appreciated more by Sopranos fans but, at the same time, it suffers because of that as it's a good way off the impeccable standards set in the TV series.

6 out of 10. Just.

I thought the Kevin Finnerty episodes were pretty good. The alternate reality of Tony Soprano.

This Many Saints was a car crash you simply can't look away from. 'Was that really Junior as a younger man?' 'Silvio is how old?' Etc,etc.
