I’m sure a follow up was what the last half hour was all about.

I really liked the DM story; the fan service seemed bolted on. A movie that just did origin stories would probably be better and might provide a bit of closure that wasn’t needed before this venture.

I do think the movie was better than any new films I’ve seen in a while.

This is probably because most films are zombies or superheroes and setting an unbelievably low bar. I'm still seething at how they fucked up a spin off from the greatest tv show ever. Just average at best.

The single worst thing was the really bad Italian American New York/New Jersey accents. Chase took big chances on unknowns in the series because they spoke and looked like genuine mob guys, some where or at least had ties to the mob. In this film I didn't believe single one was. There was the use of the word 'coloureds' too, instead of the 'N' word or other perjorative terms used in the series. Finally,Jim Gandolfini's son played his Dad like he was in real life and not in the series. He was totally unconvincing.

I spent the first 20 minutes thinking the actor playing Dickie was Richie Aprile. Ridiculously uncanny.

Nah, Mikey Palmice every day mate.

its a strange film as it crams in loads and yet says nothing much. It views like a collection of rushed set-ups to a lot of disjointed climaxes. Enjoyable enough though and it couldn't hope to match the series. My two bob:

John Bernthal was criminally under used and should have been the central character along with Livia. Dialogue wasn't a patch on the series and relied too much on quips to lift it. Too many 'name' character actors doing bad Soprano impressions slightly overshadowed a couple of standout performances (Livia, especially). The rival black gang was a total plot device that should have been left on the cutting room flooor - it detracted from the family which had plenty to offer.

Might warrant a second viewing..

Really poor casting that role,in particular.

Poor casting all round to be honest. The bloke who played Silvio was like a caricature. Then again, casting a young version is impossible as his mannerisms are truly unique.

I mentioned the poor casting in my first post. Hardly a genuine Italian American from New York/New Jersey in the whole film.

Watched it last night.

Was there actually a plot? Just seemed like a dull meandering mess to me.

No sign of young Jackie's "fawtha" who was Tony's best mate?

And the least said about the shit slapstick Junior clone and dreadful Silvio impression the better.

I was always keen on the idea of a prequel series about Junior and Johnny Boy, but having seen this I'd prefer they leave it alone.

You all know Junior is a joke, and a source of comedy, for much of the Sopranos, right? He's regarded as so little a threat that Tony installs him as boss so he can take the heat and Junior has no idea. Or when Johnny Sac, Hesch and Tony backdoor a deal to stop him being an overbearing idiot but make it seem like Junior's idea. Then there's the whole cunnilingus thing.

Junior has always been a thin-skinned man who overreacts when he's questioned or made fun of, and a bit of tit to boot; he's just funny as fuck too.

He's still very well respected and you don't rise to the level he was at if you're a joke, he'd have been whacked long ago if that was the case.

Also spent the first season being lead around by Livia and essentially being her puppet.

And there was that line from Tony that he didn't know about Ercole's existence and  thought that Junior was the feeble minded brother Livia referred to.
