when he was scouting Minamino, maybe he should have noticed the big Norwegian lad next to him.

I think a Sporting Director should be judged on the gems they find.  This summer, we needed him to find the next Bissouma at £15-20m, not the established one at £50m.  Likewise, surely there's a better £15-20m back up striker out there than Divock.

It also seems we have continuously priced players from being sold, which if you need that money for purchases, is a bit of a stupid strategy, as you end up with no one.

They were well aware of Haaland, like everyone else. We won’t bid for him because the club have made a decision not to deal with his agent.

Surely it's Raiola's insistence on putting a buy out clause in there for another rainy day which is the problem.

In which case you negotiate, tell them that it doesn't come into effect for 4 years but Raiola gets his 20% when it does.

Of course,  Haaland is a megolmanic child who could upset any well established team morale.

You're still tied in to a ridiculously low fee, the way transfer fee's are inflating the 75 million now looks bad enough, in another year or two it could be peanuts.

If Raiola is demanding 50 mill wages and 40 mill for himself on a transfer fee of £150 million this summer how much is he going to expect next summer when the player's going for half that amount, you can be damn sure they're going to want their cut of whatever the difference between the 75 million clause and his 'true' transfer fee will be.

Heard a Chelsea fan on the radio raving about how they sign youngsters, loan them out and then sell for fortunes.

Simon Jordan then said "but you've been found guilty of over 150 breaches of the rules, so you should be getting all of the best kids when you take that into account". He wasn't wrong either, it's true.

Over 150 rule breaches on youth signings!!!

Youth development is excluded from FFP as well so if you have the money to hoover up all these young  players you can do exactly what Chelsea are now doing and sell them all for 20 million at a time further down the line when they do form part of the calculation.

the odd transfer ban once every ten years is probably worth it.

Second time in 2 days I’ve agreed with Simon Jordan. I feel dirty.

They should allow just a maximum number of loans out of each club. 10 should be sufficient. Any more than that and it's just people trafficking.

Klopp has undoubtedly elevated Edwards reputation. Not a dig at Edwards at all but Klopp elevates everyone.

That's true of any manager/sporting director combo though, and I think it works both ways.

It was Edwards and his team that pushed for Salah, for example, and it took Klopp to show the trust in that team to agree and adapt his preferences to make that work.

It's not the actual players that are important, it's whether the board and manager can find common ground on what types of players they want to buy. Klopp makes that possible through having a clear style of football and cooperative attitude.

But then, it does seem like it's mostly the scouts and other staff who pick players, like for example Salah. And Jota who Linders had worked with and Robertson, who I doubt Klopp would have known much about. Yeah, in sum, it's a team effort.

Klopp (like me) also wanted Gotze over Mane, after rejecting Mane a couple of years back at Dortmund.

Klopp tried to sign Mané at Dortmund. He even met him but Mané felt Klopp was too "in your face" for Sadio's personality so went to Southampton instead.

Edwards, the scouts and the data science team, are all top-notch. The hit rate for transfers, especially considering the price is ridiculously high. Even the players we don't sign - but are interested in - end up going up a few levels like Sarr, Bowen, Raphinha, David, Sulemana and Bissouma. They call it spot on virtually every season. We were after Osimhen but wouldn't pay what was required, and he's one of the best players in Serie A now. The thing that's holding us back is FSG refusing to pull the trigger. If they just listened to Klopp and the team, we'd have no problems, but instead, they refuse to pay what's required, and it hamstrings us every year.

He only signed for us to reunite himself with the best defender in the world,Dejan Lovren. He's been angling for a move away ever since DJ left.

You can't real off half a dozen players we're linked with as signs of good scouting. We're linked with hundreds of players and they're mostly shit. Nobody knows if we're interested or not. We don't know how the story starts. If it's a player who's playing well when we get linked it's an easy link, if he goes shit, the story goes away. If he's good the press just circulate the same old shit. It's an absolute nonsense way to judge our quantative analysts. We can look back to the players we've signed. That was shite before klopp (see the summer Suarez left as a perfect example) and has been much better since. It's working as well as most clubs right now as a team, which is great and long may it continue. But let's not pat them on the back for things they haven't done.

I remember after Mane tore us a new one at st marys and Klopp had his arm round him at the end of the game, obviously told him if he wants to win medals to fucking well sign for us. Glad he did.
