Lothar Matthaus

Redondo

Rijkaard

I don't think either Keane or Viera where DM

Mind you i could argue neither was Matthaus, all three i would say box to box in the truest description. Viera was at his best with Gilberto Silva and Petit  both more defensive and allowing him to roam. Same with Keane, he was at his best with Nicky Butt. There's a reason Scholes wasn't a regular then, mind you there's a lot of Myths about Scholes career

Tricky one this, because a lot of the most defensively strong midfielders were so much more than"just" DMs.

Regardless of Lee's post, I'd have Keane as a DM in this because a CM for me is the likes of Alonso, Pirlo, Xavi. None could tackle, Keane and Vieira could.

You could argue the same with Redondo, as won the CL player of the tournament playing just ahead of Ivan Helguera.

It’s hard to be super precise. When you play 4-2-3-1, you don’t need a specialist DM IMO. Then again Sammer is a popular CB choice even though I don’t think he ever played in a flat back four.

And yet Xabi played more of a traditional/6 defensive role. I get why people are putting them as a DM but if you checked any heat map of games played they where more advanced. They only sat deep when their legs went. Im not saying don't count them  just making the point so many counted as what we would call a DM today aren't. They are the last of the older generation of midfielders who grew up when you played as a 2 in the middle and had to be able to do both.

Without the ball Helguera was more sweeper than DM for Real allowing both fullbacks to push up. When in possesion he pushed up leaving it as a 2.

Sammer was old fashioned sweeper and played in a back 3.

You find more in modern football and formations like the 433 or 4231 than the deepest midfielder will be a ball player, the other will be a Mascherano,Kante type who can go hunting and pressing the ball freely knowing the pure defensive positioning work will be done by Alonso/Jorginho types

Yep. And a modern DM was an olden day sweeper.

Nah.

A modern day DM will drop back to receive the ball from 2 centre backs, occasionally dropping back into the middle of them to make a back three.

A traditional sweeper would drop deeper than the 2 centre backs to cover behind.
