Thought this was a pisstake before, what a fucking time to be alive..

Alana Smith, the first openly non-binary athlete to compete at the Olympic Games, has been repeatedly misgendered by commentators while competing in the women’s skateboarding competition.

Smith was misgendered by callers from the BBC despite having their pronouns “they/them” written on their skateboard.

Was it a a 2 man (sorry, person) skateboard . Or do they them use the plural as there is no singular ?Why not just have LOOK AT ME, LOOKAT ME !! in big bold caps instead. Non binary my arse

Russia v China volleyball. Like something from warhammer. Amazonian goddesses vs lanky goblins.

Cracking game isn't it. The Russian number 8 is erm... good

Goncharova? She's the golden girl of Russian volleyball so I hear.

Cracking sport, looks aside, fast paced and brilliant ralleys.

Is she? Can see why.

Yeah this is superb to watch. Hope it goes to a decider

There are some bizarre sports at the Olympics now. Rugby 7, basketball 3, skateboarding, beach handball. And yet there is no Texas Holdem.

Paul O’Donovan expects mum to be ‘annoyed’ despite winning gold for Ireland

O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won the lightweight double sculls in Tokyo to claim their country’s first Olympic gold medal since 2012.

Olympic champion Paul O’Donovan expects to receive the wrath of his mother when he returns to Ireland with his gold medal.

O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won a thrilling lightweight double sculls final in Tokyo on Thursday to claim their country’s first Olympic gold medal since 2012.

The pair became the first male Irish gold medallists since boxer Michael Carruth in 1992 after beating Germany by just 0.86 seconds at the Sea Forest Waterway on Thursday.

But 27-year-old O’Donovan admits that achievement may not be enough to earn the plaudits when he returns home to see his mum.

“I’ve been ignoring her all the while so she’s going to be fairly annoyed, when I get home I’ll get a back of the hand across the face I’d say,” he told RTE.

O’Donovan also became the first Irish athlete to win Olympic gold and silver medals, having finished second in the double sculls with brother Gary in Rio.

Talking about winning at his sport’s biggest event, a jovial O’Donovan added: “I suppose it’s fine.

“We are just trying to do the best we can and hopefully be the best of the rest of them.

“That’s the race plan we had, we do it all the time and it seems to work OK for us. Italy and Germany always go hard, you can count on that, and then slow down a bit.

“Once we were catching up to them we knew we were at a sustainable pace and kept going.

“Winning today and a silver medal last time, I’ll be a bit happier about that. The silver medal is nice but Fintan did the right job and we went straight to the top at his first Games.”

McCarthy added: “I’ve been chilled out, usually I’d be a bit more nervous but felt really prepared. The expectation doesn’t weigh too heavily on us, we do what we always do – the best we can.”

The duo had set a new Olympic best in the semi-final of six minutes and 05.33 seconds but had to fight for gold.

Germans Jonathan Rommelmann and Jason Osborne were 10 lengths clear after 500m but Ireland slowly closed the gap and managed to edge ahead and were a length in front before the finish line.

Non-binary, but chooses to compete against women?

Take the easy route much?

To get to the highest level in gymnastics you obviously need to be extremely talented and very strong mentally as even at low level the gymnastics coaching set-ups are very strict and expect perfection (Which is required to win anything).

My daughter did it for a few years (only for fun) but even the coaches at small club level act like the Gestapo. I wouldn't like to think how the communist countries treat their athletes.

Djokovic out of the tennis, beaten in the semi final by Zverev.  He can no longer do the Golden Slam this year (maybe in three years?) so Steffi Graf so far remains the only tennis player to achieve this.

Some of it was made public some time ago, through Nadia Comaneci and Soviet athletes, the horror stories. And beyond Communist countries and gymnastics, the story of the Japanese volleyball team which was subjected to mental and physical torture. That one was even presented in a positive light at the time, as far as I remember, how dehumanization gets results.

Then there’s the coach that sexually abused Biles and loads of other gymnasts. In that article the athlete actually says ‘even Larry Nasser didn’t examine me’
