Sinusitis

Recommended Posts

Had this for almost 2 years and I'm thoroughly sick to death of it. Anybody else suffer from it and does anybody have any remedies or cures?

Over the past 2 years I've been on different anti-biotics and various antihistamines but truthfully, nothing has made any difference (apart from the dozens of drugs they had me on in hospital during my vivid troubles). Right now, my nose is running but I cannot blow it, feeling blocked, and it's been a nightmare trying to sleep.

Any old wives cures or anecdotes?

Mine was so bad last year that I bought a neti pot and used warm water, salt and hydrogen peroxide (3% or thereabouts and a few quid at the chemist. Only use a little in the water, very diluted) and flushed out my nasal passages. I also had a camera into my sinuses, antibiotics and blood tests. it stung a bit but I was desperate to be rid of the pain.

The cause for me is a sudden tree pollen allergy accordion to the blood tests, so this year I took an anti allergy throughout the pollen season and it worked. I had the occasional day with a little hint of pain but it never developed into anything.

I feel your pain, it hurt my face, teeth and eyes. It affected my eyesight too.

(I wouldn't use Hydrogen Peroxide unless you read up on it first, and certainly not often, maybe just once. Stick with a little salt and warm water after that.)

not sure about the UK, but apparently here in Ireland, in and around 30-40 years ago they planted a shit load of some swedish birch or nordic ash, something along those lines,

And now obviously all those trees are mature and the vast majority of people are allergic to their pollen.

I personally now take antihistamines and nasal sprays most days during the summer months. But never had any issues as a kid.

Coukld be something similar perhaps?

Isnt there a kind of vaccination you can get if it is a form of hayfever that you have? I heard something on the radio about it recently enough

Ive bever been diagnosed with sinusitis, but I used to get what felt like pools of phlegm at the back of my nose that irritated me. I used to use a Neti pot, which gave some temporary relief, although my doctor wasn't pleased when I told him about it.

Living in London I was told I had to expect minor sinus issues, what with the pollution. Interestingly, I gave up smoking last year and things have definitely improved.

Funnily enough the specialist that I saw about mine at the ENT told me to keep up with the neti pot.  You just need to ensure everything is clean and sterile, otherwise you could end up with bigger problems.

Thing is, it doesn't really give me any pain as such, it's just so exhausting. Rarely get a decent sleep because breathing through the nose is nigh on impossible some nights.

I've blown my nose like mad but whatever"s in there seems determined to stay in there, and hacking it up and spitting it out fares little better.

A neti pot should help to clear, just go with warm salt water.

Had chronic sinusitis in 1990, they were going to drain my sinuses. Bent down to get something from a draw one day, went dizzy and sat down quickly blowing through my nose as I did , unintentionally. 2 small what I presumed were blood clots came out of my nose, they were like little ravioli. Never suffered since.

From what I remember, that was his concern, that I could make things worse if I wasn't fastidious about keeping the equipment and water sterile.

I sometimes get very blocked up, not very often but when it happens it feels like I'm drowning.

I find Otrivine works for me, you can buy it over the counter.

Good stuff.

Tried it.

I'd never heard of these before now so I've just had a look at a couple of YouTube vids (including a suited up Hugh Jackman demonstrating how to use one on an Aussie chat show - bizarre), might give it a try.

What kind of salt should be used and where would I buy this?

I used table salt, you can buy special solution if you'd feel better about it.

Flixonase nasal spray and antihistamines help me massively with tiredness but even at that I get that drip down the back of my throat and hence stomach issues like acid-reflux.

Also, I never had this until I was in my late 40s - I live in the country and walk my dog through the wilds every morning so I suppose what should I expect?

It's a bastard. I suffer with it every couple of years or so, so it isn't chronic, but it's that pain right on the bridge of your nose that makes your eyes ache that I fucking hate. A cold compress seems to be the only thing that brings relief.

Dunno if I've got this, a head cold, a generic virus, generic hayfever or what. They all have the same symptoms!

Had to go in the office on Monday but was tired after watching the match. Had two pints and thought I might have been hungover (unlikely, but I've barely drank for 7 months). Felt terrible. Banging headache. Stuffed/runny nose, aching teeth, sore throat, aching limbs and joints, fatigue. Ended up calling in sick today after everything got worse yesterday.

Found myself this week on hayfever tablets, paracetamol and ibuprofen. Not sure if that's what making me tired so haven't taken anything today.

Is this just cos of some pollen?! Felt like this back in May as well.

Fellow sufferer here.

I get a really dry nose with it but feel like rivers of snot are running down my throat with it. Post nasal drip, I believe it's called. I also get headaches and a sore, tender face either side of my nose just under my eyes. It can sometimes look inflamed there too. The worst bit of it all though is when I get a congested nose and a big ball of shite sensation right at the back of my nose/throat. It's horrible and I feel like I can't breath properly and have to take a big, forced swallow to clear my throat.

I've had the camera down/up my nose. I've apparently got a slightly deviated septum. Also got a grass pollen allergy.

Up until recently, I've been using over the counter stuff such as antihistamines and Sterimar saline spray. Tried a new thing called Hay-Max too which is like a drier vaseline type substance. You rub it around the base of your nostrils and your eyes and it's supposed to act as a barrier to trap some of the pollen entering your airways etc. Not sure it's really worked though as I've had a few bad flare ups recently and the doctor have put me back on the Avamys nasal steroid spray.

I've suffered from acid reflux for a couple of years too, especially on a morning.

Dots beginning to join I think mate.

Amoxicillin cured my sinusitis but nearly killed me due to extreme allergic reaction.

apart from that I take sinutab when I feel it coming on. Inhale eucalyptus oil and use a nasal wash regularly.

I had an allergic reaction to that as well when I was in hospital with covid. Covered in a rash all over.
