Toughest group of this decade so far, I like all of these films. However there are just three that were in my nominated 10, Shallow Grave, The Big Lebowski and The Shawshank Redemption. I’ve gone with The Big Lebowski and The Shawshank Redemption. I would have gone for at least two of the other films listed here if they’d appeared in some of the other groups we’ve had up to now.

True Romance and out of nomination loyalty Dances With Wolves.

I have yet to see Stalingrad, have it somewhere on disks, others are all good or decent. I loved As Good As it Gets when it came out but saw it again last year and don't think it aged perfectly.

And Shawshank, I think it is still the best rated film on IMDB, but I could never get past all that sentimentality in a prison fairy tale. It's always your lady boss's favourite film.

You are a cold hearted bastard, SasaS! The Shawshank Redemption is a great film. It’s basically Escape from Alcatraz with knobs on.

And I am not the only one, this from a contemporaty Washington Post unfavourable review:

But it's clear from the start that Robbins, despite the hardships, is emotionally protected by his own innocence. He charms everyone and, eventually, parlays his business skills into a useful commodity. By the end, these grim authoritarians and jailbirds are eating out of his hand. In fact, Robbins's effect on everyone is so cheesily messianic, they should have called this "Forrest Gump Goes to Jail."

I wonder what he thought of Green Mile.

I think he’s overthinking things.

I think whoever wrote that is in desperate need of a blow-job and a couple of suds
