The thing that's impressing me most is his ability to get into the right position to shield forwards from the ball without fouling.

For some reason, there are people in our fanbase who still take winning trophies seriously. It is a most curious affliction.

What if we had signed a cb a couple of levels lower than Konate, used up our transfer budget and still only finished 4th. We can all say what might have been but we don't know for sure what would have happened.

Firstly, we finished 3rd.

 

Secondly, it was largely down to the 2 centre halves we already had here.

 

Thirdly, the point still stands that a competent centre half 1st January would have kept us in the hunt for the title.

Other than VvD who has walked into our defensive set up and been successful immediately?

More probable that a new CB would have stunk the place out.

That would be great but we also needed reinforces over the summer for mid and fwd positions and even after selling more than we brought in we didn't so that should tell you all you need to know about additional reinforcements.

We finished 17 points and a million goals off the title. Signing a CB would have made the difference between third and second. (We would have had the same outcome from bringing Kabak in at the start of January instead of the end.)

I disagree. When we beat Palace last Boxing Day we were about 5-7 points clear and pissing the league. Depending on Matip and so on before plumping for some bargain bucket signings at the transfer window's end was totally negligent. Even if we win it this season it should be 21,not 20 titles.

We got 12 points from 14 games from Palace over Christmas to Fulham on 7th March. We got 57 points in the other 24 games. 

 

Klopp and the club's mantra of waiting until the right player becomes available is working and buying another CB last January might not have been shrewd considering Konate was coming in the summer but there is no way that City were cruising to a title if we had a capable CB in early January and/or if Phillips was ready and trusted to partner him.
