New Super League to Rival CL - 11 Clubs Sign Up

It's on.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are among 12 clubs who have agreed to join a new European Super League (ESL).

In a seismic move for European football, the Premier League clubs will join AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.

The ESL said the founding clubs had agreed to establish a "new midweek competition" with teams continuing to "compete in their respective national leagues".

It says the inaugural season "is intended to commence as soon as practicable" and "anticipated that a further three clubs will join" the breakaway.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Uefa and the Premier League condemned the move when news of it broke on Sunday.

In a statement, the ESL said: "Going forward, the founding clubs look forward to holding discussions with Uefa and Fifa to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new league and for football as a whole.

"The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model.

"In recent months, extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions.

"The founding clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid."

Manchester United co-chairman Joel Glazer will be a vice-chairman of the Super League.

He said: "By bringing together the world's greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid."

What is the proposed format?

The league will have 20 teams - the 12 founding members plus the three unnamed clubs they expect to join soon and five sides who qualify annually according to their domestic achievements.

It will start in August, with midweek fixtures, and the clubs will be split into two groups of 10, who play each other home and away.

The top three in each group qualify for the quarter-finals, with the teams in fourth and fifth playing a two-legged play-off for the two remaining spots.

From then, on it will have the same two-leg knockout format used in the Champions League before a single-leg final in May at neutral venue.

More to follow.

Yeah, the Argentine and Brazilian teams will be rubbing their hands hoping to make serious money. Their Libertadores must make less than the Europa league in revenue.

Exactly Doc. Can't see how all those great South American clubs wouldn't be glancing with interest at this. Equally these dickhead clubs including the Dunkin Donuts LFC reds would love those clubs in it.

The cynic in me thinks that they picked the perfect time to announce this when there is no fans in the ground.

The government should have intervened 10 years ago.  Too late now.

This is what you wanted, foreign investment, completely unregulated, and it's a taste of what's to come in every other sector they have let grow without caring where the money comes from.

This has been in the pipeline ever since 'Uncle Jack' waddled into town with Blackburn Rovers and bought a title.

I see the point of view of the big clubs.  They take the big risks with money, they build great teams that excites fans, all fans, which is why we all buy the TV subs, and yet what do they get in return for this?  No chance of winning anything because a Gulf State and a Russian ogliogarch is buying more, AND greasing palms within the corrupt corridors of power.  Fucks sake, there's a World Cup soon to happen in Qatar.  They don't even hide the bungs anymore.

And NOW I'm supposed to defend this status quo? Apparently this is as good as it gets, this is perfection, we're cunts, they're great and pure and we're just dirty greedy cunts, not them.

I'm amazed by the audacity of the PL and UEFA.  It just confirms what a set of inept, lazy bastards they are.

I'm against this. But, trying to work out the long term consequences for the game. More will become clear as we get more information. There's been claims that it'll kill off football. I don't necessarily agree with that. Domestically, the ball is in the home associations court. The clubs have stated their desire that this new competition should supplement existing domestic leagues. That can easily still happen, surely? But, the significance of the Champions League and of a top 4 finish seem to have been obliterated?

It's all good and well for other clubs fans calling for us to be kicked out of domestic leagues etc. But, in the long run, that could be a shortsighted idea, as it'd surely devalue the competition that would then remain? The Premier League "brand" would lose huge amounts of appeal without us, United, City, Chelsea etc. And it'd lose money too. I don't like what we're doing, but it seems like the big clubs involved hold a significant amount of power and will have a significant influence on where things go from here.

I know one thing, we won’t get a decision at Leeds tomorrow.

Case in point.  It doesn't matter how we play or what we spend, we are held to ransom by the personal opinions of middle-aged English xenophobic  white men with whistles every week.  They don't have to explain a single thing they do on that pitch to anyone.  Have you ever seen a mythical 'referees report' at the end of a match?

No doubt at all that there's phone calls and WhatsApps being sent to the ref team for tomorrow.  This is part of the problem.  It's blatant and it's fine. It's just Liverpool, fuck em.

Yep. Boca Juniors, River Plate, Velez Sarsfield, Flamengo, Corinthians, Palmerias, Sao Paolo then maybe the odd team from Chile, Colombia or Ecuador.

Would make it slightly more interesting having them in it and then the whole South American TV viewers. They always took the World Club/Intercontinental cup more serious than the European clubs and saw it as a way to get one over them.

They've had their production line of players cherry picked for years by European clubs, usually for fuck all.

If the threats from the FA are going to come into force.  The English teams joining the new League would have to play in the 5th division if the Greedy greedy Bastards League failed.

Interesting to see what government intervention might happen. As a rule you wouldn't expect a Tory government to intervene but the speed of statements by both Johnson and Starmer highlights something is brewing.

Yeah, yeah, the Football League said the same thing when the 22 First Division clubs announced they were forming the Premier League.
