Why not? Who would stop them? The Americans aren't going to fight for Ukraine.

 

They'll grab everything East of the dnieper and they'll put a puppet government in to change the law to prevent Ukraine ever joining NATO.

 

And by doing so, they have secured crimea and Europe's bread basket. And Putin is a hero.

It's like asking when Hitler decided to invade Poland. It wasn't August 39, it was years before.

 

You could argue the decision to move the border West must have been decided before Crimea. In my mind, the whole bluster about Ukraine and NATO was just an excuse. The Russians knew the US and Ukraine would never agree to it. Their list of demands were farcical, just like Hitlers demands to Poland.

 

And now they are manufacturing a casus belli - an act of genocide by Ukraine so that Russia can save the russian people in the donbass on Defender of the Fatherland Day.

Given the military ordnance Ukraine has, and the population of the East, it's not going to be the cakewalk of annexing Crimea.

 

Still think this ends without invasion. It could turn into a bloody attritional campaign, and occupying a territory long term is never easy.

I'm just asking because one idiot with one swastika flag was apparently enough to denounce an entire weeks long protest in Canada that's got worldwide attention, but sending millions worth of weapons from all over the place to the Ukraine seems ok.

I can't make out the NATO strategy. It seems to comprise of admitting we will only use financial not military sanctions, and then daring the Russians to do it. Oh, and sending Liz Truss to the border in a sort of 'Manilow manoeuvre'.
