Russia v Ukraine

The most frustrating thing is that there are actually sanctions that would make a huge difference and could even cause Putin's regime to fall apart. All you have to do is seize the oligarchs' money (which is mostly held in the names of their mothers-in-law or some old classmate or whatever).

You don't have to go to war to beat them. Just take away Abramovich's and Usmanov's and Rotenberg's Western-held money and real estate. Navalny has published a whole list of exactly who it is that needs sanctioning. But it'll never happen because the London billionaire class would see the value of their real estate drop and we can't have that.

Your dedication to finding and sampling new cheeses, even in the face of Armageddon, is an inspiration to us all.

If it kicks offf, we’d last about a week. The Russians have got 12,000 tanks, the British army about 250 and 1/3 are broken being used for spares. Putin knows that the European armies are weak, underfunded , lack popular nationalist support  and there is not much appetite in the US either for their young men to be killed in another foreign war thousands of miles away.

One things for sure, if he does invade, you can bet the SWP backed Stop the war campaign will be curiously silent.

Nah the Russians are shite, they've got one aircraft carrier I think and it looks like Thomas the tank engine. Their troops are bullied conscripts.

Our jets and air defences are more than a match for anything they could muster. It's their considerable number of nukes people would have to be worried about.

Yes but I think it was Stalin who said “quantity has a quality all its own”. 12,000 shit tanks driven by unhappy conscripts is still a formidable force.

Busy times for the Four Horsemen. Obviously, Pestilence is grabbing all the headlines, while Famine has got plenty of work in Tigray, Yemen, Afghanistan, etc.  As ever, War is itching to join the party.

Happy New Year, everybody!

Surely they could just bribe the Russian troops to go home?

How much influence do you think Stop the War have in Russia? Do we have Russian MPs we can write to and say "Pack it in, or I won't vote for you"? Can we organise coaches for a peace vigil in Rostov-on-Don? Maybe we can phone in to the mid-morning talk show on Volgograd FM?

Joking aside, I fear this is going to be a major issue very soon. Either Ukraine and its citizens are going to be made into a sacrificial lamb or, 'The West' is going to have to stand toe to toe with Putin in an effort to face him down.

Even then, be prepared for further rocketing gas prices as Gazprom restrict gas to Europe around the same time.

There's not a chance the Americans will fight for Ukraine, and Europe will do nothing without the Americans. The Russians will take everything east of the Dnieper without a fight. The only question is whether they stop there or take Ukraine, Moldova, and the Baltic States too.
