Finding it hard to have an interest now in a 'top 4 battle' after that poxy performance against Madrid.

You'd have thought the players would want to right the wrongs of getting stuffed 7-2 by Villa this season - its more likely we'll drop points and our lads will start liking Instagram posts the Villa players put up after as thats how we roll now.

Last season's corresponding fixture was a 2-0 win in July, and came after we'd long since clinch the league title. The game was a struggle for the first hour or so, but late goals from Sadio and Curtis helped us maintain a 100% record at home and continue our march to break the 100-point barrier.

Remember the days when we always won at home? Remember the days when we scored goals early? I think the last time we did so was Sadio's header in the cup tie against Villa's youth team back in January, and that was at their place. Since then we've often struggled to make any impact in the first half. We've scored only twice at Anfield and one of those was a penalty.

But Villa are a side we've managed to break early countless times in the past. One of those times was in March 1996. We came out of the traps like a scalded greyhound and Villa were 3-0 down inside 10 minutes. Macca scored the opener and Robbie weighed in with 2 more goals. He was finding the net for fun that season, and scoring a few real belters too. That Lallana turn on Staunton and no-backlift rocket into the far corner from 25 yards remains one of my favourite ever Liverpool goals. Just a genius touch from a kid blessed with genius. That 1995/96 season saw us on the periphery of a title race. We were never actually in the hunt thanks largely to a slump in form the previous November, but it was the first time since Kenny resigned that we looked like a genuine contenders for trophies. Of course we cocked that idea up in the FA Cup final in May.

Oasis were the biggest band in the country back then. They'd lost out on a number one when 'Roll With It' was beaten to the top by Blur's 'Country House' (I still think the Oasis track, though a bit average, is better than Blur's song). They'd had another big hit in late 1995 with 'Wonderwall', but finally managed what was only their second chart-topper when 'Don't Look Back In Anger' came out. It's decent enough and featured Noel on lead vocals. The opening bars sound like John Lennon's 'Imagine'. If Liam wasn't singing, did he ever do anything else in the band?

We had an awful result at Villa park earlier in the season. Attacking-wise we weren't at our best but we were still a threat. At the other end though, fuck me! We combined calamity with extreme misfortune to ship 7 goals for the first time since god knows when. And that was with a team that hadn't yet been decimated in central defence. Our home form has been dreadful in 2021, seriously relegation-level. Our only home win was in a Champions League tie played in Budapest because of Covid restrictions. We seriously need to get our act together in this game (a 3 o'clock Saturday kick-off for the first time this season) and prepare for an attempt to claw back the Champions League deficit against Real Madrid. No messing about. It's do or die time. Don't leave anything in the dressing room. Have no regrets. Don't look back in anger.

You'd have thought they would have wanted to right the long list of wrongs, and settle some scores against the shite from the first derby....and look at the timid spineless shithouse performance they turned in.

What kind of weird logic is this?

I would think the «top 4 battle» became a lot more important after our game against Real, because its more unlikely we will get number 7.

REVENGE! fuck! we know how that goes, timid as fuck performance.

We had a full strength team against that lot and got stuffed so what chance do we have with a couldn't be arsed side now. We'll struggle with this one, hopefully 3 points but there's no guarantee which Liverpool will turn up on Saturday.

Yeah.

As disappointing as it is that this is where we are, it is sadly very important that we secure european cup football next season.

We can't afford to slip further behind our rivals and lets face it our owners would look to really cut funds if we don't secure it.

It is a must for us and the shitness of a top 4 battle is unfortunately where we are.

It's always best to ignore any false notions of revenge. A win at the weekend won't change the result from Villa Park any more than a win against Real would have changed the Kiev result.  Revenge is just a daft little angle for talentless hacks to waste ink on.  Players and managers have to focus on the next match, not the past.

Swerve the 433. Our front line looks absolutely clueless playing it these days. I'd put jota through the middle he pokes and prods, I'd play all 4 forwards like the arsenal game when jota came on. Milner needs to play too because he has a winners mentality which we miss with Henderson out. Please!!!!!!! if it looks like they are having joy with the ball over the top address it during the game let's not fucking watch us getting done again and again with the same play.

It was nice getting a bit of hope back after the Arsenal game, but I think it's pretty clear now the season is over. There is zero chance of us getting top four.
