I actually don't really regret missing out on the Final that year. There's something about the combination of Reds, Mancs and Moscow Police makes me queasy.

Yeah I think we lost home and away against them that season too (Mascherano sending off over there) & it was probably their best team of the era too, so prospect of losing that final would not have been appealing. We had a legitimately world class team too then though of course ..

The next year I wouldn't necessarily say we were the better team. That was the season Ivanovic scored the headers after we'd just pasted Madrid & United 4-1. Essien had Gerrard in his pocket. Very disappointing evening given the hopes headed into the game. Mirrored that season, really, and Rafa never took us to that level again.

Sami’s tackle was a fucking shocker, really poor from such an experienced and classy player.
