The front 3 have been absolute aids since December.  You could argue even before then.  Other than Leicester I don’t think there’s a game where the lads at centre back have had a major stinker or cost us the game.  I reckon Phillips has played far better than Lovren would have done.  I actually think had he been here and had to play centre back with some of the young lads he wouldn’t have just made things worse he would have potentially ruined their careers.

It’s got Reina vibes for me this and he never even had a sustained period of quality like Reina but people believing he would have made things any better are deluded.  He’s absolutely finished at this level and wasn’t exactly great to begin with.

front 3?

Since the 27 December Salah has scored 4 league goals in 15 games and one of them was a penalty.  This is ignoring that his all round play has largely been an absolute joke as well.

You absolutely couldn't argue before then. He is the leagues leading scorer. He's feeding on fucking scraps because the team is creating fuck all. Honestly, Mo Salah is the absolute least of our problems. Firmino has been poor for almost 2 years. Mane is going through one of those lack of confidence spells he's had a couple of times before - the worst one being after that big derby miss a few years back. So you can make a case for firmino and Mane (Mane since xmas anyway, he started the season very well), but salah? Fuck me, we need more of that kind of shit.

Salah started the season like a house on fire.  He was our best player and not just because of the goals but a few months in we were struggling to get over the line in games before the complete collapse in 2021.  It felt like the Palace game was the first game where we blew a side away offensively in a long time and it was going to be a turning point.  Looking back now it was like the last hurrah.

Salah’s form in that first couple of months is stat padding how shit he has been for half the season.  I get it, people don’t like seeing him criticised and want to reel off stats that don’t put things in context to defend him instead of using their own eyes.  It’s mad really considering how many goals he scores he’s so inconsistent bordering on consistently bad at finishing chances.  It’s like Andy Cole without the comedy.

No one's ever really been satisfied with Salah's "all around game" anyway. People were complaining about missed chances and greediness when he was scoring 44 goals in a season. People should probably get over it and accept what he can and can't do. He's still been miles better than Mane and Firmino this season.

we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. i am not arsed about players being called out when they're shit, but he's the leagues leading scorer again ffs at a time when our entire team has been off it. yes, he scored more goals earlier, because as a team we were playing better. he's not an out and out striker, yet he consistently outscores most of the players in the league, this year included.

It is ok to acknowledge he is not been firing on all cylinders. He gets dispossessed at a very high rate for the amount of touches he has - thats a fact.

Mane and Firmino both have been in 11 golas each from open play (score/assist). Salah is at 12.

He is a striker - every game he is furthest forward - many of those minutes through the middle. There is no question he is not scoring at the rate he has been - and neither have the other two, but lets not pretend that the front three are not designed to give Salah the most opportunities and further that he is not struggling in converting those.

They are all going through a barren patch at the same time. Our strength in the past has been the opposite of this.

He'd be doing a lot better if most of the time the ball is played to him it wasn't about 5 mins later than it should have been, twatted at him and hard to control and when he has back to goal and the tight attention of a defender on him and massed ranks of defence after that when he does wriggle free.

On the extremely rare occasions in 2021 he has received quality ball into him when he has been in space and facing goal he has done OK.

And our midfield in other years has thrived on his 1st touch. If it bounced off him as it often would, the midfield would be there to win or challenge for the 2nd ball and create another chance. That's not been the case since Xmas.

Our forwards have always benefited massively from having them all be boss at the same time. In the past Bobby, Mane and Salah have created space and opportunities for each other just by being a constant threat if the defence concentrated on one the other two would have more space and chances. Obviously them dropping off and not being able to hit a cows arse with a shovel has had a greater impact as a defence only really needs to mark Salah out of a game as the other two are pretty tepid.

Four games and four wins for the Kabak-Phillips partnership, and another clean sheet on top of that as well.

Would cool if you stuck the scores in there too
