Great choice for the Doolittle track. I Bleed is a fucking monster of a song and rarely played. Doolittle literally changed my music tastes overnight. I heard Monkey Gone to Heaven on that C4 Chart Show programme, bought the album from Woolies about 10 minutes later and never looked back.

My favourite Springsteen album. I first listened to it at a similar age that Bruce was when he wrote. It will always be my go to album. High fidelity sums it up, you feel like Bruce is sat on the sofa next to you, talking you through growing up and getting through everyday life.

Doolittle is pure guitar pop perfection. Like I said earlier, pretty much influenced the entire 90s guitar scene.

One more for one more. As overblown as this bit is, if you've tried a bit of Rancid for the first time through laptop speakers without much lower end you're missing out on one of their best elements, Matt Freeman.

He's not some mad, ultra-trained prog-God, he's a largely self-taught ska bassist who played along with a load of Motown and Blues as a kid. Beautiful singing voice too.

Even Paul likes Doolittle

I used to love The Pixies. Saw them twice back in the day. They remain that rarity for me: a rock band with an understanding of melody, plus a little bit of soul. So much more original than most of the plodding shite out there both back then and pretty much ever since.

Despite not liking them at all, one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen was U2 at the GMEX for a Greenpeace fundraiser on their Zooropa tour. They were supported by B.A.D., Public Enemy and Kraftwerk which is why I went. All three supports were great, but fuck me, U2 put on a proper show. Lou Reed joined them for Satellite Of Love, too.

Amazing night. Definitely proved to me that night that the performance element means you can really enjoy pretty much any gig, even if you wouldn’t go near the band’s recorded output.

Bringing up Husker Du in Pixies discussions is as edgy as fuck.

Well, they've always said themselves they were influenced by them. The ad that Kim Deal answered was, "Band seeks bassist into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul & Mary."
