Do people actually listen to Miles Davis and other jazz because they genuinely enjoy it? Or is it some badge of cool that I don't really understand?

I think its more the fact that people realise that one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music is better than "Don't you want me baby? Don't you want me? ohoooohhoh Don't you want me baby Don't you want me? ohooohhohoho" ........... probably.

Me personally, I've really got into it the older I've got. Discovering through trying not to be cool in my youth. Always heard snippets like Some Kind Of Blue and knew it was good. But never appreciated it.

Then I discovered Giles Peterson's Worldwide FM and really listened to Hip-Hop again. With a more focused ear on the actual music. Some of the stuff you come across is phenomenal. Both modern and classic.

What is strange, two of my favourite trio (Cream) were absolute monster jazz musicians, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Always aligned with Eric Clapton early on and swayed to blues/60'sAmericana/Rock influenced music.

Quincy Jones wrote the music for one my favourite TV shows ever, Ironside. Loads of Jazz in that. When it's done right, Like Miles and Quincy did, then it's a fucking cool mother fucker.

Loads of stuff has been picked up from folks on here. Even Code*

To add, The Human League could clearly write a catchy pop tune. Tunes that for me personally have their place. When compared with peices of art like Miles Davis and David Bowie and whoever else is in this tournament create, they are way, way behind. But there's nothing wrong in saying its good. I think Miles misses out here due to not enough people having heard him due to not giving it a go at all. A refusal if you like.
