The first two Godfather films are the strongest of all the films in these two franchises in my opinion, and that's the trilogy I'd rather watch even though the LOTR trilogy is more consistent in terms of overall quality. Godfather Part II is in with a VERY decent shout of being the best film out of all the franchises in this competition.

I like LoTR but it shouldn't be talked about in the same breath as The Godfather trilogy

I and II are up there as truly great films

Godfather 3 lacked a decent consigliere and suffered by comparison to the earlier films but was still a good gangster movie. Godfather 1and 2 are among the best films ever made. 

LOTR is great but is up against the best here.

I fell asleep in the cinema during one of The Hobbit films, first and only time I’ve done that.

Godfather for me but LOTR especially Two Towers are cinematic masterpieces. No denying that no matter how many actual fannies you've seen in real life, bush or no bush.

With LOTR and The Hobbit spawning other films over the years, the new Amazon TV series (not to mention the original and follow up books by JRR Tolkien and his son) that’s definitely fair to say it’s a franchise.
