This is the last bit from Simon Hughes' article on FSG in The Athletic today.

Don't think there will be many (if any) clubs outside of the petrochemical cheats and maybe the red Mancs spending much in summer. No one else has any fucking money.

If we want an extensive squad rebuild we have to hope PSG come in and slap some money on the table. If they don't, we'll likely see an even more mingebaggy transfer window than the one we just had. Or even worse, we end up selling one of our best players to a domestic rival.

Yeah, the economic situation is set up for us to basically bring back the same squad. At the moment, it just seems unlikely much will happen this summer, even in terms of sales. And we'll say we're gonna have a real go with the injured players back.

With crowd income likely still to be reduced next season, ditto TV income, maybe CL income too, there's no way there's going to be much additional investment. Any incoming players will be mostly funded by sales. Luckily Jurgen could sell half a dozen or more players without impacting the first team much.

Which is why it is total lunacy to let Gini go for free.

Keep Gini, bring back Harvey, buy Grealish would keep me happy.

Grujic, Wilson, Origi, and three of Shaq, Mini, Ox and Keita to pay for it.

Paty "Bam Bam" Bamford would actually be a decent backup #9 option. Only a year left on his deal, compatible with style of play, etc... But we don't really need depth, we need real alternatives. He'd not be a real alternative for a team that wants to win trophies, I don't think. It's not the worst idea, though.

When you look at City and United you see two goalscoring midfielders who are no doubt helping them to break down stubborn defences.  Gundogan and Fernandes.

We miss that sort of player and Keita of the last two years is not that player.  The Leipzig Keita, yes.  Our Keita, no. His drop off in goals is considerable (see pic).

Ox was also a fix for that, but between him Keita they've barely managed half a season.  To carry on with them now seems negligent, there seems no change in sight for either of their injury prone spells. All the while, we're paying two big wages.

I think that was Thiago pal

And Jota, to an extent. Doesn’t really help much if pretty much the rest of the 11 bar Robertson/Winjaldum are going to have anywhere from 4 weeks to a year out at intermittent periods. Yes including VVD, Gomez, Alisson, Trent, Thiago, Matip, Jota, Mane, Henderson, Keita, Ox there. Even Salahs had covid-absence too. The chopping & changing is unreal; no amount of realistic transfers can fundamentally remedy that.
