I guess it comes down to what you put more stock in - writing the songs or performing them (or both, in Bush's case). Billie Holiday brought that song to life, you could argue. 

 

As you say, both are greats and either result is justifiable really.

I love Kate Bush but Hmm Holliday not being much of a songwriter? You've got high standards. I think thousands upon thousands of songwriters would give their right arm to write some of the classics shes penned. She was also of a time and in a gene where you had to be exceptional.

Great if somewhat sad article this, featuring almost every great American jazz musician of the era. Sinatra calling her the the biggest single influence on his style and the most influential artist of the time is tribute to her that's more than deserved.

Kate's cracking. As for Billie it's a sad indictment that the article shows that the one thing that remains consistent is the utter cuntishness of the British press even in them days. When Holiday toured here she was one of the biggest stars on the planet, moving in the circles of Lester Young, Frank Sinatra, Orson Wells, Louis Armstrong etc and the first question the english press ask? Billie you still shooting up junk? The article says her reply was "I haven't come 3000 miles to talk about that honey". Although her tumultuous life was sometimes her own making she helped smash down barriers for other people suffering from racism and drug and alcohol abuse.
