Ajax (H) 1/12/2020 - Champions League - 20:00

The last time we faced a Dutch side in the Champions League group stage at Anfield was all the way back in the Rafa era. It came during the last decent season under him, before we sold our midfield maestro to Real Madrid and replaced him with an Italian sicknote. PSV were the visitors, and they were put to the sword 3-1 on 1st October 2008. Robbie Keane finally got his first goal for us, and Stevie got his 100th goal for the club with a trademark bullet of a shot from 25 yards. We were comfortable in a group that contained PSV, Marseille and Atletico Madrid, drawing both games with the Spaniards and winning against the other two easily.

Kings of Leon were in the midst of a 3-week spell at the top of the charts with 'Sex on Fire'. It's a very ordinary tune but somehow people lost their shit over it back then. It was always on the radio unless you switched over to something like Classic FM. But when you see the sort of stuff that got to number one back then, maybe it's not that surprising. At least it wasn't some x-Factor shite.

Our sex hasn't been on fire for a while now. The horrendous injury situation is the biggest reason for that. We are having to chop and change so much through injury-related necessity than because we want to give one or two players a much needed rest. Whoever is picked to play Ajax, we really could do with something approaching the tempo and intensity that makes it difficult for anybody to live with us. Win this game, and Klopp can rest as many as he wants for what would be a dead rubber against Midtjylland in the final group game.

Realistically, we don’t - for the time being - have the squad to compete on two fronts. Send out whoever’s fittest, tell them to stroll around and see what happens. Got to prioritise, and a continental competition in the current environment makes little sense.

Get a draw in this match, qualify, and then start talking like that.

If we draw, I think we would be through.

Taking it that Atalanta beat the Danes, that puts us both on 10 with Ajax on 8. Even if we lost to the Danes and  say Ajax beat Atalanta in the final game, our goal difference would see us over the line.

Yeah, a draw definitely takes us through.

Ajax are dangerous enough though, so I dont think Klopp would send the lads out to play for a draw.

Pity we have so many injuries. They'll be fancying their chances.

Give Gini and Sadio a bit of a blow.

I agree with that, that’s the right team to get us a win. Ajax is not that good.

Really dangerous game. Pity it's Wolves next weekend because they are an awkward team.
