Klopp focused on club not country for the time being

Recommended Posts

Jurgen Klopp says he is not ready to turn his focus to international management as he has more than enough to deal with at club level.

Klopp has been regularly linked to the Germany national team job over the past few years, much to do with the outstanding success he has had with Liverpool as well as the high level of respect he has back home.

Last year Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke alerted people to the interest when he said:

"Jurgen himself once said that in the event that Joachim Low someday no longer wants to be the national coach – and it would be possible for him do that – this is an option for him.”

German legend Lothar Matthaus then brought the issue to the forefront this week saying:

“When you talk about possible candidates (to replace Joachim Low), there is only one person that everyone would want in the future, and that is Jurgen Klopp.

“He is extremely successful, personable and equally popular with fans and the media.

But Matthaus added that Klopp is “far from finished at Liverpool and the national job can wait for a few more years.”

Klopp confirmed that intention in a report (via the Mirror):

“Maybe in the future but now, no, because now I have no time. I also have a job - a pretty intense job by the way.

“I am not sure if anybody has asked after me but if they don't know I have a job here at Liverpool- even though the weather is bad again!

“I like it and I am responsible for a lot of things here so I will not go and search for another challenge.”

Another top manager who is not looking for a new challenge is Pep Guardiola who this week signed a two year extension at Man City.

Klopp said that he is happy to see his old sparring partner staying at the Etihad but is wary of some other rivals on the horizon.

“I am happy about Pep signing a new contract.but I'm afraid it won't be just Guardiola against Klopp over the next few years.

“It also looks like Frank Lampard and Chelsea are building a proper team there. Man United will not stay without trying and the same with Arsenal, who have a good way as well.

"Tottenham look really dangerous this year. Leicester are really good – and 100 percent Wolves will not sleep.

"I have probably forgotten that there are others as well and I don't mean any disrespect.

Klopp said that having a number of teams battling it out for honours is a positive thing as it raises the overall standard of the game.

"I watch a lot of football. Not just us, but other teams, and I see the steps they make. That's good for all of us – and I am happy that Pep stays with me for longer.”

Joachim Low has been in that job too long (he took over after Klinsmann stepped down following the 2006 World Cup). It's gone stale even though he has an extremely talented group of youngsters to call upon. The national team had peaked in 2014, weren't great in 2016 and were very poor in 2018. They need to refresh their approach and that is best done with a new man at the helm. Not Jurgen Klopp though.

He should have been sacked after he was caught sniffing his fingers after he'd wiped his balls.

Klopp is too young for the national job and too good for an International managers job. He'd be bored out of his mind plus the standard is way below club football at the top level. The ideal scenario is Klopp stays here till he's 120 then has a 4 year stint as Germany manager and beats England win the World cup final.

    • I don't even think the drop-off in midfield has been that big, the midfield was pedestrian as fuck last year as well. There were loads of direct passes trying to get in behind the Mancs' defence on Sunday, especially in the first half. The real problems are Mane looks like he's dropped a yard of pace, Salah's touch has deserted him and Bobby has taken over Wijnaldum's old invisible man tribute act, and Jota is injured. That plus Trent looking like we've put the mascot on the pitch at the moment, we're always going to struggle.   Said it in the transfer window thread, but I think time's up for at least one possibly two of the front three this summer, presuming of course anyone is actually interested.
    • Klopp has been incredibly loyal to his starting players throughout his entire time here. Even when he first joined and most of them were fucking shite.
    • Comes back to Gomez and Virg being crocked imo. If we had Fab and Hendo in midfield it would improve things but nevertheless our forwards are a shadow of last season even with poorer service from midfield.  The whole team to some degree is compensating for our CBs being out.
    • Jesus, shifting blame?   It was something that annoyed me during the game, as a midfielder you would think Hendo would be able to perform this exact part of a CB’s game a bit better, Matip would do it and Van Dijk would do it. Gomez not so much, he lack the skill to do it.
Go back to Liverpool-Chelsea game in 13/14, everyone blame Gertard for slipping, I did not. I pointed at Sakho, simply because he should have brought the ball with him 3-4 m forward into open space and by that bypassed  Chelsea’s first line.   Again, at the time I said Agger would do that, now I say that both Van Dijk and Matip would do that instead of playing it back to Alisson as much as Hendo did. By doing that we outnumber the opposition, by doing what Hendo did, we give them time to organize and get everyone behind the ball.   Like I said, Hendo did his job defensively, but there are a lot more to football than what you actually watch happening in front of you.   Maybe I put too much expectations on him because he’s a midfielder, but this is certainly the standard we need.

    • Pretty much nonsense. I agree that a lot of footballers have nipped off to Dubai in the last few months(VVD is ther currently,or has been recently hasn't he?) But he is a long term injury so is training alone. Leaving your country for anything other than a competitive match, and I am dead set against even that personally,is just pure stupidity. It has nothing to do with politics and even a moron should know this.  Sounds like a desparate man trying to deflect attention from the shitty job he is doing.
