Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe Dies

I’m just about old enough to remember bits about how life was in these parts before he was caught. I certainly recall the scenes in Dewsbury, which is just down the road, when he was arrested.

Ronald Gregory, who was Chief Inspector of West Yorkshire Police during much of the hunt for the Ripper, was a patient of my dads. According to my mum be treated my dad like his personal physician (my dad was too nice to ever say no). History doesn’t reflect well on him or the force he commanded. Some of the mistakes made can be explained, although not excused, as being a reflection on society at the time. Others were just monumental fuck ups that certainly led to unnecessary deaths.

We went to dinner with him, his wife and her brother once whilst on holiday in Portugal. As a fanatical supporter of a certain unmentionable team that play in red, I remember listening to stories her brother told about standing on The Kop during the early 50’s, including Anfield's record attendance against Wolves. I don’t remember Peter Sutcliffe being high on on the list of conversation topics that night.

Anyway, good riddance.

I was in my late teens and was seeing a bird in Formby for a few years at that time, I think the nearest he got to around there was Preston? But nevertheless it was still worrying thinking about the cunt, around your way though it must of been really worrying for girls out at night.

I watched a programme a few weeks ago and some girls on the street were asked why are they out and they replied for the money etc, mad when you think that most of Lancashire and Yorkshire were in the grip of fear from this cunt.

I hope he's in one of those ghastly depictions of hell, a perpetual horror.

Plus the money took keep cunts like him  could go to a better cause.

It must have been worse knowing the Ripper was around too

You’ve got me thinking now. It might have been pork.

Not a very nice way to speak about a chief inspector.

That Ronald Gregory came across as an absolute cunt in the BBC documentary series on the murders. I assume he was a twat judging by how he treated your Dad?

I used to live in Yorkshire and was convinced it was my Dad, I was only 6 or 7, but he was always away when there was an attack. Thankfully the night he was caught he was with us in a hotel but had just popped out for something.

My mum certainly thinks so, she was always much tougher than my dad though. I don’t really remember him that much. I know his wife was a nice lady so I’m sure he had some redeeming features but you’d be hard pressed to get my mum to say a kind word about him.

I’ll have to check this but I think my dad was actually interviewed. He was a doctor and a geordie (for a time it was believed the Ripper had a geordie accent) so fit the possible profile.

Note: on reflection this is a better anecdote than my dinner with the Chief Inspector one.

Just had a NYT article in my news feed saying that some bloke called Tom Metzger has died today too. He was a KKK grand wizard and formed a group called White Aryan Resistance.

Today is shaping up to be a decent day. And, they say things come in threes.

The police probably got mixed up when someone said your dad had a Yorkshire nipper.

In my dead pool so that's good news.

Used know a lad who's stepdad looked like him. Used to love saying " seen your mum with the Yorkshire ripper earlier,  he's looking well" every so often

Always thought it was a bit off that they marked the spot in Sinai where God instructed Moses to lead the Israelites into Canaan by building a monastery, yet the place where God told Peter Sutcliffe to murder prostitutes has nothing, not even a plaque.
