Atalanta will be a whole new opponent for us, as the two sides have never met each other before. They wear the same colours as the first Italian side we ever faced in European competition. Back in 1964/65, Inter Milan were reigning European champions and would go on to retain the trophy that season. They were battle hardened, savvy and fully in tune with their coach Helenio Herrera's 'Catenaccio' defensive system. Their tactics were basically to remain in the game, not give up chances, take one of the very few they might create themselves, and then shut up shop for the rest of the game. If they got a goal early on, then they were happy to play out the rest of the game just stifling the opposition. It was the 1960's version of Mourinhoball. No wonder the Portuguese is the only other manager besides Herrera to win the European Cup with them. Shit-on-a-stick football is actually in their DNA, not signing world class players and playing exciting attacking football.

We battered Inter 3-1 at Anfield in May 1965, shortly after winning the FA Cup for the first time. Shanks sent the injured Gerry Byrne and Gordon Milne to parade the FA Cup around the pitch before kick-off, whipping up the raucous faithful into an even bigger frenzy that scared the shit out of the Italians. They got their revenge on the 12th May at the San Siro where a combination of Liverpool naivety, Inter shithousery and some extremely questionable (read: corrupt) refereeing gave the Italians a 3-0 win and a place in the European Cup final, also to be played at the San Siro. That last point might be the biggest reason why Inter tried so hard to stack the odds in their favour in my opinion.

Top of the UK charts at the time were some Liverpudlian band who had just gone stratospheric worldwide. The song? 'Ticket to Ride'. A true classic of both the Beatles and the era as a whole. The city was riding the crest of a creative wave and so many local acts were having chart success.

Atalanta have been the most entertaining side in Serie A over the past couple of seasons. They've played a bit like Liverpool under Klopp in Mo's first season, scoring goals galore and completely dismantling some of their opponents. They probably ought to have won the title last season but lockdown football checked their momentum. The city of Bergamo where they're based was briefly the Covid capital of Europe as Italy suffered huge losses. They've had their fair share of pain. Needlessly to say, they are dangerous and pose a real threat on the pitch.

We've been struggling to gain a foothold and impose ourselves in recent weeks, fighting to gain wins and points. It's unlikely that we'll suddenly flick a switch and be back to our imperious best, but Atalanta should by all rights be more worried about us than we are of them. Just get the job done and make it 9 points out of 9.

We'll get slammed as we are in shite form but just about sneaking wins against dross! This lot and Citeh will make us look like the shit cunts we really are!

This shit gets tiresome quickly.  Truly, you belong in the Lower Kenny with the rest of the boring, miserable cry-arses.

Great post thank you, I was at that match, I would describe as the best atmosphere at Anfield I have ever experienced . The free kick, what a goal. Tommy Smith my hero.

I remember reading or watching somewhere years and years ago... that (instrumentally/rhythmically I can only guess) "Ticket to Ride" was one of the seminal examples of Heavy Metal.

Perhaps I read/heard it wrong.

John Lennon comment which spurned a bit of conversation. It’s not really heavy metal, it’s just a great song.
