I went to Uni in Pompey in the 1980s. There used to be epic fights with the Scummer's fans in the summer months, bunches of lads would drive over in Ford Escorts and Capris and it would kick off on the common. Must have been planned but fuck me, they would have proper scraps.

They hate each other. As bad as any hatred in England.

In the winters, the MPs wading into sailors fights swinging wooden batons was a similar diversion. I haver literally seen "sailors fighting on the dancefloor"

PS. by MPs I mean Military Police not Member of Parliament.

Is that a Sophie Ellis-Bextor remix?

By contrast, spoke to a former SAS bloke who'd been in the Falklands, really down to earth and talked about the stuff he'd done the way I'd talk about a shit I'd done or a game of crazy golf I'd played a couple of years back. He was working in a curry's warehouse or something when I spoke to him, nobody knew what he did or where he'd been

This 100% they are always encouraged to play the grey man and come across as nothing special,  we spent 3 days down at some or other barracks never did find out the name I assumed it was Stirling lines basically we were just standing guard outside doors while mock interrogations were taking place and escorting " prisoners " back and too from holding areas .

We were bollocked for not being tough enough on them it wasn't a solely SAS survival course but was a combined services escape and evation exercise but obviously there was some element of SAS selection taking part .

I always remember one Gurkha taking part he had done some damage to his ankle and had probably doubled in size but the gutsy little bastard wouldn't quit .

When I worked on Southampton St Mary's stadium all the brickies came from Pompey, all had a good laugh but whether they buried a Pompey shirt under the pitch is true as rumoured I don't know.

Never seen any violence the years i've been here but heard all the hatred.

Incidentally, Michael Portillo has just pulled into Southsea, clad in rather garish jacket, more so than usual.

Yeah I heard that rumour about the shirt. I've seen some heavy violence between them.

I used to go to a nightclub called Hoddys, back of the pier. Grim as fuck but I pulled some dirty women in there. Those were the days.

Minty as fuck. All been done up recently though, I've not seen it yet. I goosed under it a fair few times.

Kings? Some great pubs around by there.

That's it, I've worked around there and to be honest some parts reminded me of home as opposed to Southampton, pubs on every corner, that was in late 80s and 90s though, maybe like everywhere some have been lost.

Haven't been down that way for about 10 years and that was just to that Shopping centre.

I used to get bladdered in the Lady Caroline? in the Hard after work and sometimes get me head down there, I think ive mentioned that before somewhere.
