As I say, that's what antitrust laws are for. As I mentioned in my other post, I personally think there needs to be some consideration in breaking some of these companies up because they are too big. I'm not sure it's quite right there should be a company with turnover the equivalent of the GDP of a mid-sized EU nation. But that just isn't the problem here. The problem is Parler and the cunts who post on it.

I think it's a bit of both really but I can understand that it's probably not the best time to talk about it right now. Maybe when Trump is gone and this has settled down a bit it'll be easier though.

I've been checking on what Glenn Greenwald has been saying recently too and he's not having any of it really. It's probably best that he's not in this thread as there'd be a decent bit of rage directed at him I think. This is a good example of facebook being the broken pile of shit that it is though :

At the same time I don't think this would've gone down too well here (shit nested twitter tweets, it's the bottom tweet i'm linking) :

This isn't going to blow over any time soon though and these corps need looking at eventually. And maybe Parler will get their own servers sorted out then....get raided by feds or something? I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

I'm not trying to argue with you, I saw this a minute ago though and remembered your post.

When was the last point in history that all our main means of communication weren't in private hands?

It's a load of fucking bollocks. Nobody is stopping them talking, Trump can talk any time he wants as can the senators. All the need to do is have a press conference. But they won't, because they can't spout their shite without it being questioned.

Exactly.

The other thing is that users with these abhorrent views are being kicked off because the majority of other users, and much of society, find their views unacceptable.  In a sense it's self-policing although of course ultimately up the the private company to decide who stays and who goes.  But I would think that if these views were not fringe and were acceptable to most other users, so if society was skewed the opposite way, they would be fine to carry on being horrible people.  But that's not the case.

Great recent habit of greenwald to make a salient point in the cuntiest way possible.

Maybe should have just revisited this old example of the dangers of the state and SM controlling the narrative (thread):

Although, to be fair, I believe he was friends with Franco so might be a bit close to the bone.

He could also remind people at any time that Trump put an opponent of net neutrality in charge of the FCC and that internet traffic in the US at a much more fundamental level is more open to corporate control thanks to him.

Edit: they could quite easily regulate terms of service to make them less vague, but I find it unlikely they would do so.

No wonder the ‘Coup’ failed - the state of some those carb loaded twats. I bet Che Guevara was in good shape, and Castro was the son of a farmer, so probably used to heavy labour at the crack of dawn.

Well...no. This is the GF.

Dave will be along to ban @skaro forthwith for breaking terms of service.

There does need to be a fair amount of work done on the regulations around social media (and probably a break up of some of the major tech firms too).

Either the twitters and the like are legal publishers, in which case they can allow whatever posts they like, but are then responsible for content and can be sued for libel, taken to court for promoting criminal activities, etc.

Or they are a technology platform, with no responsibility for content - in which case they need to submit to greater regulation by governments on rules, such as free speech and what have you.

Currently they try to have it the best of both ways, and have so much clout they can pressurise any government and squash intervention very easily.

The internet was founded with the grand idea that it could be used for sharing information and knowledge around the world for the betterment of humankind, but it's actually just turned into a mechanism for identifying and tracking individuals for marketing purposes.

By national security risk I assume he means we can can't fill our vastly over funded and over staff military machine. Probably some shit about Korea or China invading them.

On the other hand its probably a security blanket to half the world

I realise I’m well behind the curve in this thread but shocking as last week was, it was also fucking hilarious.

That guy dressed as a Minator was hysterical. His interview was even better, what a crackpot.

Just imagine the US giving it the holier than now attitude if this happened in a Middle East country or somewhere.

I felt slightly guilty, but I sat down watching it all unfold as if it were the Champions League goals show. Prime entertainment. Turkey curry on my lap, naan, and a chilled cider, settling in to see if democracy would survive.

Up there with the time I spent an afternoon watching an increasingly protracted and fractious roadside arrest, peering through a spyglass and eating Malteasers. It really is the simple things in life.

Haha! I don't think twitter brings out the best in him at times, I hope he takes regular breaks as well so it doesn't drive him mad.

He definitely hasn't helped, agreed.

It's what it would have wanted.
