Is Marshall Mathers our new centre back?

I don't think anything will change at CB. Everyone will come back, likely including Kabak. Phillips will get a new contract and then depending on how much we can get for him, he'll stay as 5th choice, or be sold. He might want to leave at that point, actually, if we can't get him game time. He will have earned it somewhere else.

Yeah, that's exactly what I think will happen, assuming Kabak does OK in the last couple of months. He's done OK up to now, just OK, but he'll have the advantage of having been here for a while if we do sign him permanently in the summer. It'll be Van Dijk, Matip, Gomez, Kabak, Phillips, Davies.

I just can't see any point in keeping Matip at all.

He will just be injured time and time again and unavailable when needed - even used as cover, there is no point when someone is hardly ever fit and can't be relied on when needed.

Outside of Gomez and VVD the rest just aren't good enough for us.

2 new pacey centre halves who can play confortably in a high line and one of who challenges Gomez as number 2 and the other makes up the proper 4 centre halves we need is what we should do IMO and Matip going.....come the end of season he's played in 19 of our last 76 league games.

This season:

Squad 10 - Started 9, Substituted in 1

Injured 28

Last season:

Squad 16 -  Started 8, Substituted in 1, On Bench 7.

Injured 22

50 games missed due to injury over 2 seasons.

We can't carry that.

Hard to follow. Do you have a spreadsheet?

Nat Phillips reminds me of Phil Jones.

Only he’s better on the floor, better in the air, better at tackling and better at blocking crosses than “the next Duncan Edwards”.

The lad can only do his best and give 100%, and he’s been doing exactly that.

Fair fucks to him.

Its quite surprising that Rhys Williams got his chance in the PL/CL before Phillips did. Obviously Klopp wanted more of a ball player but half of the Premier consists of teams that still lump the ball 100ft in the air at every opportunity and Phillips is much more useful in that way.

I don't think Phillips was registered for the CL when Williams was playing - Nat started in the league before Williams did.

Don't see what the problem is with him? He reminds me of Hyppia but with slightly less of the positioning and poise.

Hyppia!!???

Slightly!?!????!??!!!

Negative. Phil Jones is a goofball.

And I like Nat, the way he launches himself at the ball is boss.

His agent was asked and apparently clarified that Phillips' contract doesn't run out at the end of this season, as previously widely believed.

Who knows if that makes him more likely to be money balled this summer instead of being kept on for next season.

As a team who want to play a high press in an extremely mobile set-up that has aspirations of continuing to win league titles and European cups, if Phillips is anywhere near our first team squad, we are in trouble.

He's done well for us as we've shown relegation form.  And while it's very much of this side of the world to celebrate players diving in head first to win balls, it's also bollox.  We rightly hammered Lovren for being drawn to the ball so often that it resulted in games like he had against Spurs that time. That's what's in Phillips future.  Dogs of war types players are not what we should ever want.  The sooner he's out of the team the better.  And that's not a slight on him.  He's apparently a lovely lad, and he's a decent to good player.  But we are the current Premier League Champions.  We are in the quarters of the European Cup and if the draw goes our way, have a chance in it.  Nat Phillips is simply not that level.  If he was, it wouldn't have taken the soon-to-be 24 year old a massive injury crisis to get a few games.

Jimmy "European Cup winner" would disagree with this. There's hope for us all.

Which is exactly the point I was trying to make.

Suppose I don’t like him being compared to that useless manc. He has potential to be much better than him, who hasn’t quite reached his potential as ‘United greatest ever player.’

He has to stay. He's done well when called upon and will quite happily launch himself at the ball like Lovren used to; only Nat makes contact with the ball and gets rid as opposed to Degsy having a total brainfart launching in and giving the oppo striker a free run on goal.

Not only that, he also looks like the caddy from Happy Gilmore and I find him amusing.
