A few, but it can be hard to differentiate sometimes from people who do know the artist but just don’t like them.

It's not too hard to work out when their post starts with 'I've never heard of *****'.

What male solo artists from the 2000s and 2010s are a glaring omission from this tournament? Are there any?

@Sugar Ape

There are probably two or three rappers that could make a good case. It is the most influential music of those decades.

From pop I would say maybe Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake - both multitalented (can dance, sing, act, tell a joke) kind of a throw back to the Rat Pack.  Both have kick ass bands and are great live.

And what a 7 years! But again you've exampled a band in a solo artist's competition.

When you're talking about longevity & quality, it doesn't really matter if it's a group, a solo artist or an orchestra, music is music.

If you need examples of great solo artist careers which were short...

Eddie Cochrane

Jeff Buckley

Otis Redding

Tami Terrell

Sam Cooke

Tommy Bolin

All possibly shorter than Michael Kiwanuka's.

They got knocked out second round but to a band that ended up going all the way to the final. And they knocked out The Talking Heads first round who are a pretty big and influential older band.

Don’t pretend you’re not sitting there right now watching YouTube videos about how they faked the moon landing and JFK getting shot.

Talking Heads.

For me greatness in a musical context is mainly about how much a song, album or artist stands up over time. I suppose it’s conceivable that something new transcends that but I can’t think of many examples.

That said, I listen to almost nothing that isn’t new: usually brand new (as in just released) but sometimes an older track that’s new to me.

So if I see “greatest” as the sole criterion in  a music poll, it’s not very likely the artist who hasn’t established that his songs stand up over time gets my vote.

Janis Joplin

Franz Schubert(if you want to start down the classical route)

I don't think length of career is really that important, but if you don't have that on your side you really need to have done something special to get put among the greatest 64 male solo artists of all time imo. Its also fair to say that the majority of them artists would likely have gone on to even bigger things had they lived longer

I did state earlier in the thread that I wouldn't have Michael Kiwanuka anywhere near the greatest male solo artist of all time (to say he is would be ridiculous), I was merely defending him against people who supposedly haven't heard of him & yet were happy to have a pop.

Looking at the context, it's easy see how he qualified, he's current, popular on here & has released a monster of an LP in the last 12 months. Bizarre that his inclusion seems to have caused more of a stir than Shakin' Stevens really.
