He was mates with our local butcher in Huyton when I was growing up. I was in there with my mum one day, I was about 7 and remember just standing there while Ray was behind the counter talking. He came out and started talking to me but I was dead shy. Next time we went in Ronnie (the butcher) said Clem had been back and left a present for me. He’d bought me an autograph book and the first two pages were filled with all the autographs of the 1971/72 first team squad. One of my most treasured possessions.
Hope it works out for you Clem.

What an amazing thing to do.

That's got me.

When I was growing up he was my favourite player even above Kenny ...So much so that I always wanted to be a keeper at school to the point I used to actually volunteered to play in goal until my mates decided I was too small and shite .

Get well soon to a keeper who should have had well over a 100 caps and holds the world record (460 ) for most clean sheets

I could never understand why Shilton got picked ahead of him.

Clem was a much better keeper.

It's bizarre when you consider Ray was playing for a top side, challenging for titles at home and abroad with Liverpool while shilton for most of the time was at perenial relegation strugglers leicester until moving to forest.

I honestly think it was the fact that shilton deposed Gordon Banks at leicester as a 16 year old and successive England managers used that as the yardstick to judge him.

You're probably right.

It's the only thing it can be really however illogical the reasoning.

If you know what I mean.

He tweeted this in reply to Allissons earlier Tweet ; Thanks for the message I really do appreciate it. The support of GK Union is always special. Can I wish you and the team every success in the future. As you are realising it’s a special place to play. Ray

Yes indeed they were. For me when I started going on my own it was the, Toshack Keegan one nil days and things just got better.

I started going on my own 76-77 season when I was 13, but usually with my Dad for the midweek or European Cup games, but with him prior to then.

The atmosphere in the ground then was just unbelievable.

I still think the loudest noise I ever heard was the roar when Davy Fairclough  scored the winner against St Etienne. My ears were ringing for days.

The only tickets we could get for the semi final against Zurich we're for the Anny Road and lads were running the length of the pitch to try and get in the Kop before kick off. I was going to try but my Dad stopped me saying if I got caught I'd get chucked out.

He was right and I'm glad because not only did we see the Bizzies grab a few lads, I wouldn't have seen the Kop, live, in all its glory as I'd only ever been on the Kop before.

Magnificent.

I can't go anymore, haven't for over 20 years because of illness, so I treasure the memories I have.

I used to love seeing Ray charging out of his goal to challenge and clatter an attacking forward,he took no prisoners, tough as nails and so athletic.I really do feel privileged to have watched him from the Kop for his whole career. Great, great days

Or charging towards the Kop to celebrate a goal scored at the Anny Road end after we'd battered the opposition but been unable to score until late on.

Couldn't believe it when he left us for Spurs.

Still loved him though.
