Negligent not to buy a centre back.

I’d say borderline criminal.

Georginio Wijnaldum is reported to have rejected Liverpool’s latest contract offer and now looks poised to move to Barcelona.

The midfielder has proved to be one of Jurgen Klopp’s best signings since he arrived from Newcastle in 2016. Indeed, he played more Premier League minutes than any other Reds midfielder last season. This term, meanwhile, he has already racked up 24 appearances.

But his future has become uncertain after entering the final year of his five-year deal. Barcelona have been strongly linked with a move for the Dutchman; the move very much endorsed by compatriot Ronald Koeman. The player himself has done his best to dismiss talk that a move to the Nou Camp is on.

Indeed, reports recently stated that Wijnaldum’s preference has been to stay at Anfield. However, Todofijaches, via the Daily Mirror, now claims Wijnaldum has rejected their latest proposal.

They claim their latest offer has ‘fallen short of the mark’ and has left him disappointed. Furthermore – and perhaps most damning – they claim Wijnaldum now longer wants to be at Liverpool and has decided to leave. His heart is now set on Barcelona who are now free to negotiate with him on a pre-contract agreement.

However, despite now being in the final months of his deal, a respectable source has dismissed claims Liverpool will agree to his early release.

Great couple of weeks this has been.

Do players ever sign contracts this late in the day? Genuine question. In my head it feels like it's always this dance, for the final few months, before they end up leaving.

Klopp named Gini as the player he'd most want to negotiate his contract, so maybe he knows something about the dance.

in recent memory it has happened with Ozil at Arsenal, which worked well. I think we will see Messi sign up again at Barca.

The end of that article was a little worrying - I hope he is not ready to down tools. His performances over christmas were as bad as any he has had this season.

Far better than Phillips and Williams mind. I don't think he's particularly great either, but he'd be an option for six months. Obviously lost his way at Arsenal but once upon a time he was a 35m centre back.

If it was all we could do and choice was him or PhIllips and Williams for rest of season then on a deal to end of season yeah.

Far, far from what we should do and hope we do, but much better than doing fuck all.

From what I’ve seen of the two I’d say Williams is better than Mustafi.

Fully expect him to be playing for Benidorm FC or the like within a year or two.

    • I suspect whoever buys Kane will base their decision on more than his performance at one tournament. He is the current golden boot of course.
    • Every time I see this I hear it in the voice of one of the dads army lads when he said capt. Manwaring.
    • If i was them and got a offer of 100ml for Kane id snap City hand off. Kane ankles are fucked. They could nab Calvert Lewin and still have money for another midfielder
    • Yes, because no-one knows about Kane's qualities, and are aggressively monitoring him at the Euros to see what the fuss is all about.   There is no chance in hell his "best days are behind him"
    • The reason Spurs have not approached Rafa, I reckon, is because of his outspoken character, not afraid to voice his displeasure at the owners, whether about money or other political matters within the club.   Levy took a huge chance on hiring Mourinho with the prospect of him winning one of the cups to tide them over. But it became so toxic and unworkable that just days before they were about to play the final, he pulled the trigger, as it would likely have locked Mourinho in further, along with a potential trophy bonus, so it was probably the lesser of two evils as he saw it. Added to that was the failure to get a top 4 place, which would have been a higher priority than either of the domestic cups.   Now they have to walk a very tight line between somebody compliant and the ability to get them to the CL which they absolutely need given the massive debt they have to pay off for their stadium. Rafa would certainly be their best bet on the latter, but would the former be a price they're willing to pay?
