Really weird isnt it? People were saying just sign some centre backs, we dont mean £30m each, just someone.

Now the club is signing someone, they're not the right centre backs, not fast enough, not good enough.

Every fucking time and it's always the same people who come out with the just sign someone, no not him, those two fuckers who are as good as Virgil.

Yeah there’s nothing wrong with thinking about things in a balanced way.

I’m skeptical of FSG overall and the lack of action before now was ridiculous.

Like they have precedent for though, they are correcting a mistake. Ideally I don’t want them to keep making mistakes (which they do) but at least things get addressed.

If we hadn't got 6 points last week then FSG wouldn't have put their hands in their pockets and give the league up for lost.

Are they that hands on? I would have thought they gave basic financial parameters months ago and Klopp and Edwards said, in that case we probably won't bother but now with Matip fucked too they activated emergency bargain bin options.

Agree with the general point, it's a bit much to whinge (as I have) about the lack of defensive cover and then get angry over who we try to sign. But Mustafi has proven over several years that he can't cut it in this league – every time we've played Arsenal it's been clear we target him as a weak link. So I'd just be mystified if we went for him. Is premier league experience valuable if it's done nothing but prove they're shit?

Basically anyone else I'd be delighted with at this point.

Van Dijk was at Celtic when he was 24. This lad was heading there at 25. Its pretty fucking obvious he's just 1 year behind Virgil in his development.

And Sami was 26 when he joined us from a lower level club having done next to nothing in his career before that. Big Ben is looking like a cross between Virg and Sami.

Dramatic masterstroke by FSG, all this. We’re being lined up perfectly for the mother of all deadline day disappointments.

By the time we hear Marseille wouldn’t let us sign this lad because they couldn’t get the ghost of Jean-Alain Boumsong in on loan, Ian Ayre’s solo ride back from Ukraine with an empty sidecar where Konoplyanka should have been will feel like signing Van Dijk.

Could be out for the season. Needs to see a specialist.

You wonder if Matip's latest injury collapse was the final straw in terms of not buying anyone, because they realise that even when this initial crisis is over he can't be relied on long term, as Gomez can't really. We have to build from scratch around Virg.

Im all for balance. But these threads are filled with all sorts of conspiracy theories. People seriously think the owners arent bothered the club isnt winning? The ethos across all their sports teams is about winning. When have yanks put up with coming second? Henry wouldnt shake the King's hand when we came second in the cup final against chelsea. He was wrong to show that disrespect to a legend but it shows second isnt acceptable to him or FSG.

Yes, Im certain they operate to fiscal budgets and the management across those teams including Jurgen buy into it. Many people seem to dismiss the fact Jurgen prefers to work with a core set of players.

I think Jurgen would have gone with Phillips and Williams as cb cover for the rest of the season and be happy to do that. If Virgil could come back before the end of the season, more power to his elbow.

But when Fab and Matip once again broke down, then bringing in others became a lot more pressing.

Yep. Even with VVD we will have to rotate and manage him better than we did pre injury.

I’ll be pleased with two CBs - regardless of what Klopp said last night about backup, I would be shocked if it doesn’t mean we have our midfield back where it should be within the next few weeks; the displacement of Fabinho and, to a lesser but still very real extent Henderson, has been the single biggest reason for a mostly awful month.

I’ve had relatively few issues with FSG - I think the spending policy has been vindicated through the years, but not being ready to sign a defender when this window opened remains a terrible error. I said before that I don’t think it was outrageous to think Van Dijk, Gomez, Matip and, on the rare occasion Fabinho, would be sufficient cover. Instead, we were heading into the new year with the emergency deputy as the only fit CB forcing Henderson to drop back. I have no interest in replacing the owners but as far as I’m concerned their reluctance to act this month has been at best, deeply disappointing and at worst, extremely negligent. But for the last two wins it’s a decision that could have gone a long way to flushing five years of progress down the toilet.

Nail on head I think as Ive just posted.

My extremely premature view on all of this, is that we are looking long term.

I think we want Upamecano in the summer (when his £40m clause kicks in). We know that Matip and Gomez aren’t reliable so rather than have 4 CB’s we’re looking to have 5; there’s also a possibility we’ll sell Gomez I think.

VVD

Upamecano

Kabak

Gomes/Davies/Phillips/Williams (delete where appropriate via sales etc).
