Georginio Wijnaldum is reported to have rejected Liverpool’s latest contract offer and now looks poised to move to Barcelona.

The midfielder has proved to be one of Jurgen Klopp’s best signings since he arrived from Newcastle in 2016. Indeed, he played more Premier League minutes than any other Reds midfielder last season. This term, meanwhile, he has already racked up 24 appearances.

But his future has become uncertain after entering the final year of his five-year deal. Barcelona have been strongly linked with a move for the Dutchman; the move very much endorsed by compatriot Ronald Koeman. The player himself has done his best to dismiss talk that a move to the Nou Camp is on.

Indeed, reports recently stated that Wijnaldum’s preference has been to stay at Anfield. However, Todofijaches, via the Daily Mirror, now claims Wijnaldum has rejected their latest proposal.

They claim their latest offer has ‘fallen short of the mark’ and has left him disappointed. Furthermore – and perhaps most damning – they claim Wijnaldum now longer wants to be at Liverpool and has decided to leave. His heart is now set on Barcelona who are now free to negotiate with him on a pre-contract agreement.

However, despite now being in the final months of his deal, a respectable source has dismissed claims Liverpool will agree to his early release.

Great couple of weeks this has been.

Do players ever sign contracts this late in the day? Genuine question. In my head it feels like it's always this dance, for the final few months, before they end up leaving.

Na not with us. Seen it with other clubs but not our owners

Klopp named Gini as the player he'd most want to negotiate his contract, so maybe he knows something about the dance.

in recent memory it has happened with Ozil at Arsenal, which worked well. I think we will see Messi sign up again at Barca.

The end of that article was a little worrying - I hope he is not ready to down tools. His performances over christmas were as bad as any he has had this season.

Would anybody take Mustafi from Arsenal if it meant we got another centre back in?

Far better than Phillips and Williams mind. I don't think he's particularly great either, but he'd be an option for six months. Obviously lost his way at Arsenal but once upon a time he was a 35m centre back.

From what I’ve seen of the two I’d say Williams is better than Mustafi.
