That Duncan Castles reckons we've talked to Sven Botman about a January transfer and we now just have to agree a fee with Lille.

Pity he is a complete and utter liar who says things that never come true.

Duncan Castles or Sven Botman?

Only kidding. I'd like to sign Sven Botman if only because he has the most Alan Partridge/Fast Show football name ever.

The most Fast Show football name ever was Chris Waddle.

Fucking hell. James Pearce gets paid to write about football and he comes up with that the 'Schlumberger could be Liverpool's key signing of the window' line.

On a more interesting note, whilst i was googling to see if that was a genuine Athletic article or a wind up, i did come across this. Next big thing Dave Moli, is now an artists and wears a turtleneck.

That’s quite a nice story, really. I can’t believe that it’s just about a decade since Kenny returned as manager though. Fucking hell.

Ideal signing would be Declan Rice as he could cover two positions very well but he wouldn’t come cheap.

He’s a defensive midfielder.  He’s played centre back twice in the last 3 years.  Once against Everton where they got beat and conceded 4 and once against wolves where they got beat 2-0.

If there’s one position we do not need cover it is defensive midfield.  We need a centre back who plays centre back not a defensive midfielder who would be about 3rd or 4th choice at best to play in his position and behind our other defensive midfielder as the 5th choice centre back.  If you add in that they would want about 60m for him he would possibly be the worst transfer in the history of football.

I get you might like him as footballer because he’s alright.  He’s not Liverpool level though and would be a complete waste of money.

There’s a lot to like about him; He’s athletic, a decent passer of the ball, and is a leader. He play both positions quite comfortably (he’s played CH more often than you think, see below screenshot) and he’s not the finished article so who knows what he’ll end up as. He’s homegrown too and I think we’re a bit short of them at the moment, in danger of missing the quota.

Weren't most of those centre back appearances as part of a back 3? Personally I'd like us to buy a real centre back. Fabinho is playing terrifically well there, but he's not the man to help on the days the kids are playing there as he need to think about his own game and I'd like us to get to a point where he becomes an option midfield again - or give him a rest as he is another who picks up a small amount of muscle problems.

We are at a "beggars can't be choosers" point and we might have to go for whoever the spreadsheet says yes on and they are available this window. I can't say for solving our current crisis I would see Rice near the top of my list, but he'd likely be a better option than Williams and Philipps.
