From what I remember the club wanted either Alisson or Oblak but Athletico wanted the whole fee upfront for the buy out and Roma were happy for the normal installments.

Honestly would have been delighted with either

We targeted the two best keepers in the world. Irritatingly little to criticise the club about there.

Upamecano will be beyond us. Bayern will probably get him to replace Boateng and Alaba. There's no real obvious target anyway because Gomez and Matip, as much as they get injured, will be taken into consideration. Same for van Dijk obviously as he's the biggest investment we've ever made in a player. Even if they may "never be the same" after all their health problems.

Just can't see big investment. Tarkowski is as good as a solution as we'll find if he does indeed have a clause. That Kabak kid maybe as well, as he won't be too expensive.

There's another defender at Schalke04 who has been mentioned - Malick Thiaw.

The risk of falling out the top 4 will be bigger than the risk of FSG loaning the club money for a CB in January.

Not telling either player will ever be quiet the same either. Matip will be 30 before next season

Fsg don't have to loan the club anything, the club would have no problem increasing their rolling credit facility.

Is correct, but do you see Klopp wanting to go out and buy, he always looks at the long term picture. If it is not a player we were always going to sign i think he will stick with what he has and try to make Phillips and Williams better players through training.

He likes people to acclimatise to his football and the demands it puts on you. It could take another player 6 to 8 weeks to get himself up to speed and Gomez might be back around that time.

I don't have I problem with Gomez , but he's far too brittle . Should definitely be looking to upgrade asap in my opinion , maybe keep as back up but no way is he going year after year as a regular.

Mings is a better centre half than Tarkowski.

Mings Contract expires in 2024. Tarkowski's end in 2022 and he has rejected a new contract. Villa would want 70 million for Mings, Burnley would sell Tarkowski for around 35 million.

Baz Wom was right the other day when he said we could sign Tarkowski in January, then sell him on for the same sort of price in the summer if he didn't cut it here.

We won't be planning to use Gomez again this season, absolutely no chance. I'm not saying he mightn't get some minutes, but at this point we'll be planning without him.

Klopp does often make do and mend, but he knows the demands this season will bring, he knows running over half a season with 1 injury prone centre back would be pretty much setting our expectations below winning things. Under the covid circumstances he might be good with that and so might fsg, but as we only have 3 senior centre backs anyway, I don't see why making a long term addition is a big issue anyway. Also, we try to patch centre back from midfield, but fabinho misses his share of games, as do henderson, keita and thiago. I've been saying for 18 months I'd happily get rid of 2 of lovren, Gomez and matip in return for a good robust centre back who can get on the pitch on a regular basis. I've not changed that point of view, so I'd happily take someone in January even if it meant sacrificing one of the crisp bags in the summer.

The problem with all that is I don't see how we'll get any value (which fsg will absolutely insist on) unless there's either someone with a release clause, someone who's maybe on a bosman and we'd pay a fee for half a season or perhaps finally some club absolutely on the bones of their arse because of covid and desperate to raise some funds.

Chances are we were planning on buying a new CB next summer anyway so I think there's every chance we'll try and accelerate the process in Jan. If we can't buy one of the CBs we've probably already been targeting for a year or more then maybe we'll switch to a short-term fix but I think that'll be a last resort.

The optimistic recovery time for major tendon surgery is 4-6 months so I can't see Joe back much before the CL final.

This is a list of centre backs out of contract in 2021. This is the 1st page of 4, but I decided it was probably worth stopping at this point with names like Luiz, Rojo and Sokratis at the bottom of it. I'm assuming we'll be shooting above them.

Didn't know Ramos was so old. I could see him at Chelsea replacing Silva.

Yeah, most of the players that are earmarked by Pearce et al. ahead of time are never the players we end up getting.

I'm beginning to wonder if @El Rojo doesn't predict what happens - he makes it happen.
