Hopefully Shaqiri scores another pearler from a set piece.

The quarter final line up looks strong apart from whoever wins out of Brentford or Fulham. Newcastle will be more interested in staying up like they are usually. It will be a tight schedule in December if we get through as the qf takes place 21st/22nd.

Not arsed tonight’s game was the biggie yeah it would be nice to win this trophy again but with the way the fixtures are piling up in this condensed season the league and big ears are the main objectives for rme .

Nobody who started tonight’s game should be on the pitch Thursday

Couldn't agree less.

We're a few wins from a trophy. Winning trophies is a good thing.

The thing about this trophy is the winners get to box it off nice and early before the serious months of the league and Champions League campaigns.

Winning this hasn't had a detrimental effect on any big team's season since they introduced penalties.

Anyone saying that we should play the under-10s and basically throw this competition needs to grow out of their Pampers.

Yeah,I was more talking about the modern era but you are correct.

It's always been a bit of a weird competition. Used to be a two-legged round when the first and second division clubs entered (presumably to lessen the chance of them being knocked out), then knock out ties and back to a two-legged semi-final.

That game last year in the League Cup had nearly everything. Goals galore, mistakes galore, Big Div with a stoppage time equaliser to make it 5-5, and then Curtis wrapping up the win in the shoot-out. It was unfortunate that the EFL had such poor scheduling, knowing that we were going to be away in Qatar in December from the moment we won the Champions League on June 1st. They had plenty of time to foresee a fixture clash, yet they faffed about and we ended up playing the Under-18s reserves in the quarter final at Aston Villa.

Anyway, the No1 in the charts throughout that period was the god-awful 'Dance Molnkey' by some stupid dickhead with a shit voice.

Us against the Gunners is a fairly frequent fixture in this competition. The first meeting was at Highbury back in 1968 but the first meeting at Anfield was on 7th February 1978. We won 2-1 with goals from Kenny and Ray Kennedy. We got to the final that year (League Cup finals were played home and away back then) where Nottingham Forest edged it. They won the league that year too, but we managed the 'consolation' of retaining our European Cup against Club Brugge at Wembley. Kenny got the all-important goal and we were still Kings of Europe.

Number 1 in the charts at the time was the superb 'Uptown Top Ranking' by Althea & Donna. Certainly one of the better finds of this year's thread theme. Top ranking we certainly were, both uptown AND downtown. Midtown and out-of-town too.

The cup tie on Thursday night will most likely see a similar line-up to the one that dispatched Lincoln in the last round. With a league game on Sunday night, we were always likely to rest a lot of first-teamers in the League Cup. We have the quality to binbag Arsenal once more, but the players have to show it, as well as being aware of Arsenal's spawny nature under Arteta. Just get the job done and let any future fixture congestion be an EFL issue to resolve. We can always throw in the teenagers again if need be.

Great stuff

December isn't too bad for us for the big games in the league.

Next round will fall between

Crystal Palace (A) and WBA (H)

semis at the beginning of Jan falls between

Southampton (A) and Burnley (H)

The final clashes with Sheffield United so that will need to be moved.

Obviously FA cup and champions league games might be a factor once they get added.

Neco Williams should, and will, play. This is the exact type of fixture he's replying on, and anyone who thinks it's not the right move has clearly not been paying attention.

Go on Neco, lad. Show 'em who's boss.

The last CL game is normally the first midweek in December. Hopefully we will have qualified by then.

The semi final is a one off game with the team first out of the hat playing at home rather than the usual stupid two legged semi in January.
