R.Lee Ermey  as the Gunnery Sergeant in Full Metal Jacket .

Apparently he was brought in as a technical advisor, but turned out to be better than the original choice.

He was a former Marine training sergeant.

Pulp Fiction was perfectly cast - Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta. Who would have thought that would work? Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken etc just perfect.

Well, almost perfect. What was Quentin thinking casting himself in it? Quite jarring.

Yeah, and he received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant (he retired as a Staff Sergeant, one rank below). Well respected in the Marine Corps.

R Lee Ermey got the role after hurling insults for 20 minutes at an actor playing a Marine. Apparently he didn't repeat himself once, and most of the insults he hurls in the film were things he came up with rather than the tamer stuff Kubrick had in his script (which he'd got after speaking to other drill sergeants while prepping the film). It's the only time Kubrick allowed for improvisation on set, because he could see how effective it was.

Brian Glover as the PE Teacher in Kes. Perfectly cast because he was a teacher.

Wilson.

Wouldn't have worlked as well with Mizuno or Mikasa or Nike.

Spalding would've been all right though.

Not really cast though, was he?

Copland on the other hand... Demolition man too.

Leslie Nielsen in Airplane! At the time, he wasn't known for comedic acting and even in this film, he basically plays it straight. But how well does it work!
